The Akaroa Mail. TUESDAY, AUGUST 12.
We understand that Mr Gissiek has been appointed to assist the Rev Mr Douglas on the Peninsula for a time. He is advertised to hold an evangelistic meeting in the Presbyterian Church, on Wednesday (tomorrow) evening at 8 o'clock.
Elsewhere appears a letter from the Clerk of Works to Akaroa and 'Wainui Road Board in which he complains of a paragraph which appeared in our last issue, respecting the employment of daj T labor on the roads. Mr Duxbury quotes the resolution of the Board correctly, and it is also the case that in our paragraph we inadvertently omitted to mention the exception of bridges and culverts. We merely gave form and shape to rumors with which the air was teeming, and Mr Duxbury should be rather gratified-than otherwise at having . them put into a shape which, affords him the opportunity of giving them a categorical answer. As no objection was raised to any of the accounts for labor which were presented last Saturday, we presume that the members of the Board are satisfied that their resolution has been faithfully complied with, and that the rumors in question are without foundation. Mr Montgomery, the member for Akaroa, arrived last night. As we have already stated, he intends to offer himself for re election. His address appears in another column. It is clear and outspoken to a degree. In our next issue we shall have some remarks to make on the coming election in this, and other places.
Mr A. D. Bayfeild, travelling agent for the Government Life Insurance Department, has arrived in Akaroa, and intends making a canvass of the district. Those who have not yet attended to this imporant matter should interview Mr Bayfeild without delay, as his stay will- only be short.
