ORIGINAL POETRY.
In the mellow night I sit, Idly disregarding it; Idly rocking to and fro, As the shadows come and go, Asking vainly, asking why ? We were parted, you and I. Dusker still-the shadows fall, Stars shine through the poplars tall, Roses seem to lose their bloom, Drooping in the evening gloom, Still I sit and wonder why ? ' ; I We were parted, you and I. ' Though our lives lie far apart, Deep down in each beating heart, Lies the thought that will not rest; Could it have boen for the best ? Shall we ever know the why ? We were parted, you and I. If, in another better sphere, We that were to each so dear, Meet, with all earth's shadows past, With the truth made clear at last— Shall we know the reason why ? We were.parted, you and I.
