CORN EXCHANGE REPORT.
The following is the report of the Corn Exchange for the week ending Friday evening, May 23:— There is not much improvement to report during the week in the grain trade. Business is stagnant, and operations are made with extreme caatiou. The pressure for money is not relaxed in any way, rendering transactions very meagre. Wheat.—There is a better feeling in the wheat market. First-class milling is freely saleable at 3s 6d per bushel; medium to inferior, 3s 5d to 3s 2d ;-chicken feed, 2s 10d to 3s; for the latter there is a good enquiry. Oats.—The demand for this cereal is strictly local. Milling qualities cannot be quoted at over 2s 7d to 2s 9d ; feed, 2s to 2s 7d per bushel. Barley.—'Prime malting samples cannot be quoted at-over 5s 9d ; medium qualities 4s 3d to 5s 3d ; feed parcels, 3s to 3s Gd. Potatoes.—The supply offering is very limited. During the week there have been several enquiries for supplying New Zealand ports. Little or no business has been done, as farmers are vory firm in holding out for their prices. Prices nominal at £,3 5s to £3 7s 6d per ton, bags extra, with a strong upward tendency. Cheese and Butter.—There is no alteration to note in values ; the former 6d to 6|d, the latter 10d to lid. Grass Seed.—There is a better enquiry, but prices are still nominal.
