LICENSING COURT.

Tuesday, March 4,

The usual quarterly meeting of the Licensing Court for Akaroa and the surrounding ' districts was held at the Resident Magistrate's Court, Akaroa, on the above date, before Justin Aylmer, Esq., R.M., Chairman, and H. H. Fenton and A. C. Knight, Fsqs., Commissioners.

B. J. W. Chamberlain applied for an hotel license for the above hotel.

The police reported that the house was clean and in good order. The furniture was on the spot, though it had not all been unpacked. The police were in favor of the license being granted.

The Chairman said that a petition had been lodged against the granting of the license, but it was not very numerously signed. The license was granted. LITTLE AKALOA HOTEL. Henry M'lntosh applied for a transfer of the license of this house to his son, Alexander M'lntosh. Granted. Garwood's house, hill-top. A transfer of this license was applied for from Edward Haines to Edward Jackson. The transfer was granted, the Court cautioning the licensee to provide better attendance for his customers' horses. They had been informed that at the last meeting of the County Council gentlemen had been obliged to saddle and unsaddle their own horses. PROPOSED HOTEL AT LITTLE RIVER. Mr Nalder, on behalf of Mr Franks, asked for an expression of opinion on the part of the Court as to the probability of a license being granted for a new hotel at Little River, plans of which he produced. The Court would not hold out any encouragement to the applicant that a license would be granted for an additional house in that locality, nor that in their opinion Mr Franks was a suitable person to hold a license. There had been numerous complaints against him as a landlord while he kept the Beach Arms. Considerable opposition had been raised to the opening of one hotel in the vicinity. Mr Nalder reminded the Court of the advent of the railway. The Court reiterated that they could hold out no encouragement in the matter.

Mr J. E. Thacker, licensee of this hotel, was in attendance to explain to the Bench as to his fulfilment of a condition imposed at the last quarterly meeting, that he should reside on the premises. He had

put in an application for a transfer, but it had not been lodged in time. With regard to the residence qualification, he had fulfilled it, with the exception of the time when he waa laid up, from the effects of an accident/ ,

The-Court intimated that they would sit again in three weeks,' 1 , and Mr Thacker could put his application in in the proper form by that time.

PIGEON BAY HOTEL. It was reported\of this house that the accommodation was insufficient, also that esce'sriive drinking hacPbeen carried on > The Court rernmefeel the licensee that at their last quarterly meeting it had been decided to cancel the license at the expiration of the present lease, unless substantial improvements should be made. This the licensee admitted had not been done, but he asked for a fortnight's grace to enable him to make final arrangements for closing the house.

Adjourned for three weeks, which would give the applicant the time he asked for.

The remaining houses in the district were well reported on.
