LITTLE RIVER ROAD BOARD.
A meeting of this Board was held at the office, Kaituna, on Monday, 3rd inst Present—Messrs Parkinson (Chairman), Forbes, Gebbie, and Coop. The following letters were received :—- From Mr Garrick, in reply, relative to certain quarry reserves which : have passed out of the hands of the Board.; the same having been sold as pre-emptive right, and stating it as his opinion that the Board is without legal remedy, but advising that representations be made to the General Government 'through'Mr: Montgomery with a view to recovering the same for district use.
From the Colonial Secretary, in reply to an application:from the Board for the Acts of the Assembly, 1878, and stating that it is not the intention to supply the same, withqut payment. From the County Council, requesting the Board to forward the account of new valuation; also, the amount of rate that should be derived from the last ordered to be Jevied; also, what roads the Board designate as main roads in the district.
From Messrs Fenton and Wilkins, inti> mating that they had entered into partnershi pas surveyors and engineers. '• i.
Mr Snow, of Peraki Valley, interviewed the Board for the purpose of asking them to re-consider their decision of January 13, that Messrs Snow and Anson be , paid the sum of £32 as per minute of June 6, 1878, for work done in the valley, being the formation of a bridle track from the Wainui saddle to the station, a distance of about four miles. .■■■-:
The work being solely for the benefit of on, property, the Board did not think they would be justified in granting more than originally intended, but after. considerable discussion they agreed to give those gentlemen one-third of the cost, namely £71 2s 6d, the total expended being £213 7s6d.
in complying with the request of the County Council for a list of roads to be considered as main roads, the following were .declared as such:—The Christchurch and Akaroa road, from Barry's saddle to the boundary between the Little River and Halswell districts, a distance of about 30 miles; the Lincoln road, from • the junction of the Christchurch and Akaroa road to Streeter's bridge, a distance of 2£ miles ; the Greenpark road, from the junction of the Lincoln road t6 Kimber _ bridge over the Halswell, about 70 chains. A mail coach travels the above roads daily. Also, the Lyttelton road up. .the western side of Gebbie's Valley to the boundary of the Port-Victoria district, about 3J miles. The above list was ordered to be forwarded to the County Council, as also the new valuation and other matters.
It was resolved that Mr Garrick's recommendation be carried out, and that Mr Montgomery be communicated with on the subject, and that all necessary plans and other information be supplied to that gentleman in furtherance of the matter. Sundry payments were made, ■ and the Board adjourned to the 3rd of March.
