A letter was read from Mr W. M'Kay, of Wainui, offering to allow of an old road running on the easterly boundary of section 10290 to be closed provided Mr Rhodes would allow six chains to be opened on the southern boundary of the said section 10290.

Mr Duxbury thought the Board should proceed cautiously in - the matter. They had certain definite instructions from the Government as to how - they should proceed, and they ought to carry them out. The first thing to be done was to have a plan prepared and certified to by the Chief Surveyor. , , . . ,

The Chairman thought a public meeting should be convened to test "the feeling of ratepayers. : .

Mr Duxbury contended that; the public meeting would be of no use. They must get a proper plan prepared, and get the consent In writing of the 'adjacent'landholders. He thought it would be cheaper to pay a money compensation than to go through the process necessary for closing these old roads. He moved—" That Mr Rhodes' agent be written to, asking him what money compensation he would take for the land required."

. : Mr Shadbolt would second the prpposition, though he would rather.see the old road closed.

Mr M'Donald thought they ought to make an effort to close the road. He proposed an amendment to the effect that a plan be prepared, and a public meeting called for the purpose of taking steps towards closing the old road with a view to exchanging it for the proposed new one. ■ ■■"■' '• .'.■.'.■'■■ '■'.<■ '•"
