FROM THE PRESS Christchurch, Friday Evening, GRAIN AND PRODUCE.

Business transacted this week being almost entirely of a retail character, calls tor no special mention. Buyers are holding off, awaiting for the new crop to come m, when lower prices are looked for. Fwr .vheat, a few enquiries are still felt from millers who want just sufficient to carry them over the present season. A few small parcels have changed hands at 3s lOd to 4s. Oats are being woiked off in small lots at 4s, and to clear out stocks some consignments have lately gone forward to Melbourne. A plentiful crop of maize is reported in Victoria, and will tend to regulate next season's prices. Two or three lots of new barley have been offering for forward delivery at 4s 6d to ss. Ini .v. % have not heard of any buyers at ti---i.se extreme figures. Some growers, !i_..ever, are asking even higher prices, b-it there appears to be very little probability of their anticipations being realised, i .fjiir is for the moment, somewlmt firmer, aud millers now quote £10. Bran and sharps are quiet 'at £5 10s, f.0.b., sacks In potatoes only a retail trade is being dvime at various prices. The prospect of a notwithstanding the drought, is ssiid to he looking very favorable in some districts. Butter and cheese are not yet much enquired for ; farmers are expecting better prices this year, but we have heard of no buyers over 8d for butter and 6d for cheese. Ho.ms and bacon are in excellent request at lr-|te quotations. Messrs R._wilkin and Co;, report under date Jan. '\id :— Wool.—About 1000 bales are now in place for Tuesday's sale. Sheepskins.—At our sale to-day 2608 i-kins were catalogued and all sold. There \va=- ojuv a ii'-iited number of buyers, with fairly spirited > bidding, viz. :—Cross-bred, 3s to o.s lOd each, do, small and inferior, '2s, 2s b\i to 3s each. Merino, 3s 2d to 5s od each ; do, small and inferior, ls 6d to 3s 2d each. Pelts, 2d 4d, and , lOd each. Lambskins, ls 2d, ls 3d to Is 4d each. Tallow—At our auction sale to-day there was only a small quantity of butchers' rough fat to hand, all of which was sold at very even prices, although the trade was spansely represented :—Best, clean, well saved, 2|d to 2£d per lb; second quality, 2d to 2jd per ib ; inferior and heated, l-|d to 2d per lb. Hides are in fair demand and even prices maintained :—Salted, 3d per lb ; cut and damaged half price.
