AKAROA RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Friday, Dkc 20. (Before Justin Ay liner, Esq., R.M.) Civil Case, chappem, v. jonks. Claim, £25 17s 10d. damage done by a bush fire alleged to have been caused by defendant. E. Chappell, the plaintiff, deposed that on Nov. 10 the tire came on to his land. The fire was lighted by Jones and his son. By the Bench : The fire came from defendant's land. 11. S. Bushell had been called in to examine the scene of the fire and to assess the damage. Had done so on Nov. 22. He valued the property destroyed at £25 17s 10d. The fire seemed to have commenced on Jones' land about twelve or fourteen chains from Chappell's boundary. W. Curry said he had no .fires on'his land. He saw a fire on Nov. 10. B. Peterson deposed that defendant acknowledged having lighted fires on the 2nd November. On the 6th and 7th he said he had made up heaps. Mary Chappell gave evidence that Jones had told her that he had lighted fires on the 7th, 9th, and 10th of November. The fire came in and burnt plaintiff's fence. Defendant's evidence was to the effect that the fire which did the damage was started on the 16th November. He lit a fire on the 10th. On the 11th he saw neither fire nor smoke. He did not start the fire on the 16th. Was not able to be out on that day. The damage to Chappell was done on Sunday, 17th, not Sunday, 10th. The case was adjourned till Tuesday, the 24th inst., for further evidence. The Court then adjourned.

Satuuday, Dkc. 21. (Before Justin Aylmer, Esq., R.M.) DRUNKENNESS. William Thompson, for being drunk and disorderly, was fined 10s. The Court then adjourned. ;

Monday,. Dec. 23. . (Before Justin Aylmer, Esq., R.M.) DWJNKENNESS. • James Burns, alias Black was fined 10s for drunkenness and disorderly conduct. OBSCENE .LANQim-QE. Mary Brough was dharged with using abusive and obscene language to Susan Kenny. ; , Defendant was ordered to be bound over to keep the peace for twelve months, herself in £20, and two sureties in £10 each. In default, one month's imprisonment. The, Court then adjourned.
