AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD
Saturday, Dec. 21
The usual fortnightly meeting of this Board was held as above, at the office. Duvauchelle'e Bay. Present—Messrs Duxbury (chairman), Williams, McDonald, Shadbolt, and Curry. The minutes of the previous meetingwere read and confirmed. The Chairman had a complaint to make as to the manner in which a cheque which they had to receive from the County. Council for the Mount Bossu road had been dealt with. He stated that on the previous day he had met the Clerk to the Council, who told him that if he did not fetch a a cheque which was lying at the office for the Road Board, he (the Clerk) had instructions to cancel it. He (the Chairman) could not go at once, and when he did go round, he found the cheque had been cancelled. He did not think the Board bad been treated rightly in the matter. Considerable conversation ensued :on the question. It appeared that the County Council's letter had made it a condition that a receipt for the money Bhould be forwarded before the cheque was handed over. The Chairman would not consent to sign a receipt .before receiving the money, and he did not see why they should be treated exceptionally. Other cheques had been sent out to his knowlodge, and receipts sent in afterwards. The Chairman and Mr Shadbolt were appointed to wait on the Council en the matter at their next meeting. Mr Aylmer reminded tlisFoard that the previous offer was conditional on immediate possession being given. It was not in his power to renew that offer, nor should he feel inclined now to recommend the Government to do so. It was agreed that all the correspondence should be forwarded to the Government, letting them know the reason of the action taken by the Board, and asking them if they still declined the offer of the Board. According to this declaration the road in question was not shewn on the plan by which he had purchased. < The Clerk was directed to write to Mr Tabart, attorney for Mr Inman, to ascertain the correct state of the case. The Chairman was in favor of going on with the work at once. Mr Williams thought they had better have some more definite information. Ultimately it was agreed to alter the specifications so as to exclude the portion ofthe road claimed by. Mr. Roberts, and to let tenders for the remainder. BUIDGE OVER AYLMKH's CREEK.
