THE EXHIBITION
Distribution of Prizes,
On Tuesday evening the prizes gained at the Industrial Exhibition* were distributed in the schoolrootii. There was not so large a concourse as; from the nature of the proceedings might have been expected. The prizes consisted of very handsome books, vases, and article 1 - useful to tlie needlewoman. Mr S.; WatTjins, the lion, sec, with a few appropriate remarks to each of the recipients, .presented to the following persons their respective prizes. Where not otherwise specified, the prizes consisted of books, many of them being vary valuable works :—
'Mr W. Watkins (oil painting from nature) —Lamp valued at £2 IIX presented by de Beer and Co. Mr Morej-—Drooping plant George Penlington —.Two prizes for drawing and mapping , Boy (name not sent) of Mr Westropp's school, Little River—lllumination 1 Miss Thomas (cone work and feather flowers) —Two vols, of "Good Words" ; Augustus Watkins—Collection of ferns Florence Dawber and Christina.. M'Kay, —First and second prizes for plain needlework Jane Dalglish (crochet) —Pair of vases Adeline Ditely—Antimacassar Ethel Watkins (hemming handkerchief) —Pair of vases Alice Haylock—Wool-work George Checkley—Lettering ■ Mr" 11. Billens—Ornamental writing Charles Newton—Case of mathematical instruments, presented by Mrs Montgomery for drawing, and book for writing. (The statement formerly published that F. Scott gained the.prize for writing was a mistake.) John M'Gregor—Book presented by Mr Meech for writing of various sizes Sarah Checkley—Very handsome work box presented by Mrs Montgomery for drawing, and a lady's companion ot elegant design presented by Mr M. Smith for writing of various sizes Mabel Scott—Beautiful work basket presented by Mrs Montgomery for writing Agnes Sunckell—Half a guinea, presented by the Press Companj' for knitted socks L. Watkins (music copying)— Prize not yet presented Lily Reid (knitting)— Extra prize Oswald Watkins (freehand drawing)— Paint; box, presented by Mrs Montgomery for writing, for which there was no exhibit Charlotte M'Kay (knitted socks) —Extra prize Louisa Edgson (knitted bootees) —Pretty ■work-bag. (Tlie statement formerly published that this pri/se was gained by C. Bruce was a mistake) Emma King—Book presented by Mr Nicholls for darning Mr G Riches—Book presented by Wilkie and Co. for carvings in shell, &c. Mr W. Kearney (model of steamboat) — Photographic album, presented by Mr Billens Ellen Houghton (bouquet)— Fancy bag Mrs Kearney--French alarm clock, presented by " Sundowner," for patchwork Margaret Bruce—Egg-stand, presented by Mrs Garwood for making white shirt Mrs Yewen (ironing shirt) — Muslin dress Miss Armstrong 'point lace) —Volume of poems Alma Watkins—Half sovereign, presented by Mr J. Aylmer forcrewd work Mr Billens—Opera glass, presented by himself, for water color drawing of Akaroa Mr S. Watkins—Life of Wellington, in two vols., presented l>y Crerar and Whit combe, for water color drawing from nature Mrs Mai thy (knitted laca)—Muslin dress Ellen Houghton—Book; presented by Mr Daly for industry. Tbe committee awarded this prize because E|len Houghton contributed many excellent articles to the 1 exhibition, nearly, but not quite, taking prizes in making shirt, knitting socks, and cone work Mr Black's prize for model cutter was not in the hands of the committee. With this exception, all promised prizes were given ; in fact, several prizes were presented which had not been offered. Tbe horticultural prizes will be presented by the secretary shortly after the meeting of the committee which takes place this evening.
