AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD
A special meeting of the the above Board was held at the office of tho Board, Duvauchelle's Bay, on Saturday, the 11th instant'
The members present were Messrs J. Duxbury (chairman), F. W. Williams, B. Shadbolt, and C. M'Donald. Mr H. H. Fenton, the Board's Engineer, was also present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. MOUNT BOSSU ROAD. The Engineer explained that the vote of £900 for road to Lake Forsyih was made up of two votes, one of -.'SOO to carry the road from Mount Bossu to Wainui Pass, and the balance of £000 to carry the road from thence to the end of the Lake, the latter was in the Little River district. Tenders were directed to be called for the work, and the Engineer was requested to ascertain the exact amount of road in the Board's district. OLD DUVAUCHELLE'S BAY ROAD.
Mr Martindale again waited upon the Board in reference to the closing cf this road,- blaming the Board, the public,- and the County Council for stopping this road, and indulging in a long explanation of some neighbor's quarrel in regard to a well. After exausting the whole of the arguments on the subject, he was informed that the opsning of the matter again was quite irregular, as tbe road bad been finallystopped by the County Council's resolution, in terms of clause 9:5, sub-section 11, of " The Public Works Act, 1876." Mr Martindale then requested the Board to allow him at the rate of 8s per chain to fill up a catch-water drain, which originally cost the same sum to open. The board offered 6s per chain for the work, and on this being i efused, directed the Clerk to employ day labor to do the work. OFFICE SECTION IN AKAROA. A letter was received from Mr Austin, Resident Engineer, Christchurch, asking if there was any prospect of the Board giving possession of section 83 occupied by the Board in the town of Akaroa, at an earlier date than the month of March.
Mr Williams was sure there was no wish on the part of the Board to prevent the Government occupying the section at once, and he would move that Mr Aylmer be written to, saying that the Board are now willing to take his offer of £35 for the stables, and give the Government immediate possession, and also that Mr Austin, the Resident Engineer, be informed of the same. The motion was then put and carried. BELL'S ROAD, GERMAN BAY. A letter was received from Mr W. S. Williams, solicitor, Christchurch, as attorney for Mr F. Lyons, giving the Board notice not to enter upon a piece of land in German Bay valley beyond a certain point marked A, B, on a plan sent on the sth inst., as the land beyond these points is the private property of Mr Lyons, and on the Board's failing to comply with the notice by entering upon the land, or otherwise trespassing, an action for trespass would be commenced against them. It was resolved that a copy of the letter be sent to Mr Bridge, and he be asked as Mr Inman's agent, for an explanation. The tenders for this work were, in the meantime, held over until the matter of Bell's road was settled. engineer's report. The Engineer reported that the proper way of giving an outlet to the residents in Stony Bay and Long Bay spur was by running a road along the summit of the ridge, connecting with the Long Bay road near Chappell's. In the meantime it was resolved to call tenders for opening the Long Bay track by way of Purple Peak for about one and a half miles.
The Engineer further reported that a good grade could be got from the Pigeon Bad saddle to Haines' Hotel if about two acres were got from Mr Latter. The matter was deferred until Mr Latter's reply was received on the subject. appointments. Mr John Barwick was elected Returning Officer, and Mr A. t. M'Gregor valuer for the district, and tho fresh election of members tirag fixed for Saturday, 4th January. PAYMENTS.
