AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Council. was held in the Municipal offices on the above date. Present—His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Crs Penlington, Henning, Bridge, Meeoh, Beacher, end Alger. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The Clerk read the outward correspondence. Letters were read- - , From Mr C. F. Barker stating, that in '

terms of the Council's letters ho had employed Mr R. D. Thomas to draw up conditions of leases of reserves. From Mr E. W. Morey, enclosing estimates for proposed extras to Fair's Bridge ; also, estimates for two new bridges. * ,; -■ ■ Mr Morey's letters were referred to the Works Committee. On the motion of Cr Henning the action of the Mayor in telegraphing to Mr 0. F. Barker was approved of. knginker's heport. Mr Roberts read a report on certain proposed works which was referred to the works committee. FINANCE. Cr Penlington read a (statement of the financial {position of the Borough, from which it appears that their liabilities to date (including overdraft) amounted to £3,61 Gs, and they had still to receive £Gl9 16s 10d, leaving a balance of £258 10s 10d available for works. The statement was considered highly satisfactory. RATES. : Cr Henning moved—"That all outstanding rates not paid by December 31 be sued for, and that a notice be issued to that effect." The motion was seconded by Cr Beecher and carried unanimously. It was resolved on the motion of Cr Meech that the Clerk bo instructed 'to employ labor to clear the weeds away from the streets before the lGth instant. AUDITOR. MrT. Adams was applied auditor, in place ofMr A. G. Wiggins resigned. This concluded the business before the Council. Before they separated, Cr Penlington said that as this was the last of their meetings at which the present Mayor would occupy that position, he wished to move a vote ot thanks to that gentleman for the admirable manner in which he had presided over the meetings of the Council, and the trouble he had taken to further the business of the Borough. His conduct had not always met with the approval of them all, but for his part, ho bad endea-' vored to work with him, and would, in like manner, endeavor to work with his successor, who he hoped would carry on tlw business as successfully as the present Mayor. Cr Waeckerle seconded the motion, and in doing so paid a high compliment to his Worship. The Mayor, in returning thanks, said he had had many difficulties to contend with. His successor would find them also. He did not attribute any little differences that had arisen to personal malice. He recommended councillors to stick to rules of debate, for example—only speaking once on a question, and to keep order. He thanked them cordially for their expression of good-will. Cr Meech was glad to hear his Worship say that he did not attribute any ill feeling to those who had opposed him. He could say for himself that he had not been actuated by any animosity. He believed his Worship had done his best. He. the speaker, was a great stickler for things being dono according to law, as it saved trouble afterwards. v Cr Waeckerle then took the chair, and the motion was carried unanimously. As the next regular meeting day of the Council fails on Christinas day, the Mayor intimated that the meeting would take place on the day before viz., Tuesday, the 24th, to which date the meeting accordingly adjourned.
