Wellington, Nov. 18
The Agent-General telegraphs that he has despatched the ship Western Monarch with 146 emigrants for Timaru, 220 for Lyttelton.
It is expected the Premier will leave Wellington for Timaru on Wednesday.
A deputation from the Chamber of Commerce is waiting upon the Premier to-day regarding the establishment of a Sailors' Home, a steam tug connected with the pilot service, and other Jess important matters. Nothing has been settled. The Premier promises to have those matters looked into.
Auckland, Nov. 18,
The Rev. Father Henneberry opened n mission to a large congregation yesterday.
JamesHoughan,a shoemaker, recently from Wellington, yesterday mounted the fire-bell stand in Queen sti-eet, and gave an address on religion mixed up ■vrith some remarks on medicine. He rang the bell, creating an alarm of fire. A constable seised him, when he proclaimed himself Christ. He was taken into custody, being insane.
Buckland held a wool sale, consisting of 250 bales, the first of the season. The following were the prices :— Wool in grease averaged 6d to 9|-d ; mixed, in grease, from 7|d to ; washed, to Is l£d, according to condition. Blekheim, Nov. 18.
A. M. Normanby, a bankrupt, was brought up on remand, charged with perjury in his testimony when before the Trustee. Case dismissed.
Westport, Nov. 18.
A mysterious fire occurred here early on Sunday morning, destroying a large bjuldijig, the property of Hooper and Itoßson, of Nelson, next the Westport 'Times office. The building destroyed was occupied as an office by the Koranui Coal Company, the Quartz Mining Company, and the local agency of the Curator of Intestate Estates. All papers connected with their affairs were destroyed. The Secretary locked up the building at 10.80, and asserts that all was then safe ; no one lives in the building, nor had it any fireplace. The building was uninsured. The fire brigade, and citizens saved the adjacent buildings the Westport Times office, and Carpenters store ; the latter suffered some loss through hurried removal of effects. An enquiry will be held.
TIMARU, NOV. 18.
A fire at McDonald's bush, Geraldine, destroyed a great deal of valuable timber.
The damage done at Waimate bnsh is enormous. Studholme estimates his loss at £40,000 ; Rickman loses in bush and outbuildings £1000 ; Barnett, mill and machine, £800 ; Theobald's bush and houses are all destroyed, leaving himself, his wife and children with nothing. Twenty-seven families are loft houseless and penniless ; each loses from £100 upwards. At 5 p.m. on Saturday the fire was still raging fiercely. Potts, who went in search of Studholme, is seriously burnt,, and suffered much on Saturday, but the doctors say there is no immediate danger.
