The Akaroa Mail. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5.

Mr A. K. Ilarlock, who figured in the late financing case before the Resident Magistrate's Court has since that been arrested on a charge of forgery connected with one of his numerous bill transactions. Since his arrest we understand that two otherinformationshave been sworn against him. He will be brought up for examination on Friday.

The nominations of candidates for seats in the County Council take place to-mor-row. Very little interest appears as yet to be taken in the matter, though perhaps there are some " dark horses " in waiting to be brought forward. A numerously signed requisition was yesterday presented to Mr Latter asking him to come forward for Berard, but as he had already consented to stand for Wainui, he was compelled to decline doing so. Mr C. M'Donald retires from his candidature for the latter Riding in Mr Latter'n favor. At present it looks like a walk over for the candidates for these two Ridings. We observe that Mr J. E. Thackei is a candidate for Le Bon's Riding. We are not aware whether the present member intends to oiler himself for re-election.

It is with pain we have to record the perpetration of a piece of malignant mischief, which might have been attended with serious results. As a gentleman was returning home between eight and nine on Sunday evening, on approaching Farr's bridge, he became aware of a woman on the far side (not a joke) who appeared to be unable to cross. She was expressing her opinion on the cause of her detention to two small boys on this side, who, on the approach of our informant, scooted with a wild whoop. On examination, it appeared that these youthful fiends had carefully dislodged the planks which form a temporary footway across the yawning chasm. The three farthest had been removed to a distance of about a foot apart, and proceedings had been commenced to remove the others, when the young miscreants were disturbed. A person accustomed to pass the bridge frequently, and not apprehending any disarrangement, might very easily have had a fall resulting probably in a broken limb. A good pliable supplejack (applied outwardly) would be an excellent medicament in cases of this description.

The Borough Council held a special and general meeting in their office last, evening, when all the existing members put in an appearance, and a considerable amount of business was transacted. The late hour at which the meeting finished precludes us giving our report until next issue.

Parliament was prorogued on Saturday by Commission. The Commissioners were the Hon. Major Richmond, Sir F. D. Bell, and the Hon. Col. Whitmore. Since our last issue no hnsiness of importance has been done, the most of the time having been occupied, in conferences between managers appointed by the two Houses. The question of privilege cropped up in that the Council had thought fit to amend the Railway Construction Bill, which the Speaker of the Lower House maintained to be an Appropriation Bill. The Houses assembled on the 2Gth July, and the Session has consequently lasted one week over three months.
