LE BON'S BAY ROAD.

In accordance with the instructions of last meeting, Mr Wilkin, Assistant Engineer to the Board, reported that ho had made a plan of the old and new roads at Inman's Woolshed, German Bay, and found that the gradients of both the upper ends of the roads were about equal, but that the lower part of the new road was better, the curves being easier. In regard to the bridge, he had to report that a considerable part of it was on the road. Mr C. W. Bridge, the auctioneer who sold the property, informed him that Mr Roberts had purchased the property from the sale plan under the impression that the new road would be made in accordance with the previous arrangement of the Board. Mr B. Mora waited upon the Board in regard to this road, and stated that the new road was the better of the two. Regarding the road up his valley, he would consider it a waste of public money to carry it further than his house.

After considerable discussion, the Board resolved that Messrs Shadbolt,- Curry, M'Donald, and Williams be appointed a sub-cominittec of the Board to visit the" roads in question along with the Clerk, on Tuesday, 22nd inst., at 11 o'clock, and decide the question on the ground. In regard to the road leading from German Bay Flat, running through Bell's property to the top of the hill, the Engineer and Chairman reported that they had inspected the proposed route of road with a view to accommodate the people living on the hills close by, and that the road could easily and cheaply be made, but they would report more in detail when time permitted, MOUNT BOSSU ROAD. In reply to Mr Shadbolt, Mr Wilkin stated that the survey of the Mount Bossu road was finished, but that a formal and final report could not be handed to the Board in consequence of his having broken his theodolite on the work, but that be was prepared to furnish a plan and description. Mr W. M'Kay interviewed the Board in regard to this road cutting up his property, and in some cases cutting his paddocks off .from water. He submitted that £650 would be a fair compensation in full, including fencing for the road going through his land, but offered in the event of the Board not agreeing to this sum, to submit the question to arbitration, and named Mr Jas. Hay, of Pigeon Bay, as his arbitrator. The Board rosolvwl to request Mr Geo. •\.;:::.-,:.--.;[ fe -. ot Akaroa, to net. for them. It was agreed, on the motion of Mr, M'Donaki, that the Engineer be instructed in making out the specifications for this

road, that the first 15 chains be formed 20 feet wide, and the balance to M'Kay's 15 feet wide. CORRESPONDENCE. 3 A letter was to hand from Mr J. L. Wilson, Chairman of the Koad Board Conference, requesting the attendance of the Chairman at a meeting in Christchurch. The letter was received too late to be attended to. Mr J. Ayliner, Resident Magistrate, Akaroa, wrote on behalf or the Government, desiring to know what the Board would tfrk-e far the office and stable on section 83, no\v required for the new Court-house; On the motion of Mr Williams, the Board agreed to accept a lump sum of £150 for the whole ■of the buildings "on the section. Mr G. W. Nalder wrote, informing the Board that the description of land taken for road diversion through Mr Piper's property having been corrected, the conveyance was now ready. On the motion of Mr Curry, the Clerk was directed to ask Mr Piper to attend and sign the conveyance. A letter was received from Mr J. Libeau re rates on part of section 752, now sold to the Cemetery Trustees. The Clerk was directed to inform Mr Libeau that the rate-book must be adhered to. Messrs Moore and Keegan wrote, asking the Board to continue the Onuku road, from the Maori reserve to Mr 11. Ay liner's property. The matter was referred to the Engineer to report upon. Mr R. H. Rhodes, Christchurch, wrote, complaining that the tracing of the road diversion through his property at Wainui had never reached him. The Clerk was directed to inform Mr Rhodes that the survey was only just finished, and that no discourtesy was intended. The Engineer was instructed to prepare the necessary sketch of the diversion, and also ascertain what amount would be required for the diversion, as compensation. Mr George Armstrong, in reply to the Board's letter in reference to Stony Bay road, stated that the road that would suit him would not suit many of the other applicants. The road that would be the best would be a continuation of the Balguerie road from Akaroa, and offered to go over the ground on a day to be fixed by the Board. It was resolved, when the Engineer is at liberty, that he be instructed to meet Mr Armstrong, and go over the road with him and report. Mr T. Brough, the contractor for the bridge at Stevenson's creek, offered to build stone abutments for 36 feet from the bridge up the creek for the sum of £20. The offer was declined, and the Clerk instructed to have willows planted to prevent the scour, the work to be done by day labor. Mr E. C. Latter, in reply to the Board's letter in reference to the Summit road from Pigeon Bay saddle to Haines', replied that he did not quite understand" what the Board wished, b> it would rather the Board did not interfere with his land, as it.had recently been fenced and laid down in grass. The Board resolved to call for tenders for widening this road, and, when the amount was ascertained, collect half the sura from the Pigeon Bay Road Board, in terms of their original agreement. PROVINCIAL LIABILITIES. Mr W. Montgomery telegraphed from Wellington, informing the Board that the Government had appointed Mr J. Ollivier, of Christchurch, Special Commissioner to enquire into the claims that have been preferred by the Board for compensations for land for road diversion, incurred by direction of the late Provincial Council. The Clerk was directed to write to Mr Ollivier, asking him to give, say fourteen days' notice of his visit, so as to enable all claimants to be present. A letter from Mr A. C. Knight' on the subject of his claims for compensation, was held over until Mr Ollivier's arrival, when it will be submitted to that gentleman. PETITIONS. A petition was received from a number of residents in Wainui and French Farm Bays, asking the Board to lay off a road from Wainui beach to Wainui Pass to join the Mount Bossu and Lake Forsyth track. Mr M'Donald thought the road asked for indispensable to complete the road system in the district. The Engineer was requested to travel over the line and report. A petition was also received from a number of ratepayers, requesting the Board to do something to make the Flea Bay road passable along Messrs J. Wilkin's and Checkley's properties. The Clerk was directed to visit and report, with a view to removing some of the rocks on the way to Brazenose. MAORI COMPENSATION. The Committee appointed at last meeting to arrange in settling some claims for damage to their cultivations by the Onuku road formation, reported that they had agreed with the Rev. Mr Stack to settle Kahoma's claim for £20, and Martin's for £10. The Board ordered the money to be paid through the Rev. Mr Stack. engineer's report. The Engineer reported that he had dug up the supports at the ends of the culverts in the Long Bay road contract, and had found them too short, and so withheld Kenny's iinal certificate. The Board resolved to call upon the contraccor to finish his culverts in terms of the specification. The Engineer further reported that P. Shadbolt and Co.'s contracts for the upper and lower part of the Okain's Bay road diversion, through Mr Piper's were satisfactorily completed, and that the Board should take them off their hands. The Board agreed to do so, and remove what slips were on the road themselves. Tenders. Widening thirty chains Wainui Beach road and bridge. W. Jones and Co., aix weeks, £120.
