It is with great regret we have to record a serious accident which occurred to Mr Edward Latter, Postmaster at Barry's Bay, and second son of E. C. Latter, Esq., proprietor of the Barry's Bay saw mills, on Friday last. It appears that the unfortunate young gentlemen was riding on a " trolly," when, owing to some slight obstruction on the tramway, the truck was thrown off the rails, precipitating him some thirty feet, and causing, besides a most severe shaking and bruising, a serious fracture of one of the legs just above the ankle joint. Dr Guthrie was speedily in attendance, and did all in his power to allay the suffering -of the patient, but we understand that as yet the broken limb has not been able to be set. We trust, bowever that under Dr Guthrie's skilfull treatment Mr Latter will soon become convalescent.

Elsewhere appears an advertisement calling attention to a meeting of this years Regatta Committee to be held at Bruce's Hotel this evening. The following are the names of the committee :— Messrs 11. Gr. Watkins, Fenton, G-. Wright, Gr. Black, Kissel, H. Bridge, Beecher, C. W. Bridge, La Coste, Bushell. T. Adams, Tosswill, sen., and Gutbcrld:, with power to add to their number. As a communication has been received from the Lyttelton Yacht Club entailing very important business, we hope that there will be a good attendance so as to allow of full discussion. Other matters of importance will also occupy the attention of the meeting. A lecture was delivered at Le Bon's Bay in the Zion Congregational Church one evening last week by Mrs Burns of this town. The subject chosen by the fair lecturer was the evils of novel reading. Our correspondent informs us that the subject was treated in full, and was the cause of much amusement, together with instruction. Mr W. Barnett officiated as Chairman, and in the course of his remarks

explained that the proceeds of the evening were to be expended in assisting to liquidate the debt at present existing on the Ebenezer Church, Akaroa, and which amounted to £50. The meeting teririi. nated with a vote of thanks to Mrs Burns for her clever and novel lecture.

Messrs Riley and Allen's 1 Minstrels gave their entertainment in tho Town Hall, on' Saturday' Evening, as advertised in, outlast issue. Through some accident; the' whole of the dompany had not arrived, but Messrs "Riley and Allen, ably assisted by Mr Gallaher as piainist, were equal to the occasion. The violin playing of the latter gentleman is well worthy of special mention, while the droll comicalities of Messrs Riley and Allen in their Irish impersonations, as well as their negro delineations, must be seen to be thoroughly appreciated. The hearty applause and almost incessant laughter of the audience, which we regret was not so numerous as the quality of the entertainment warranted, was a sufficient guarantee of the satisfaction felt by those present in the manner the programme was carried out. Want of space prevents our entering into further particulars, but as the company play again to-night here, for the last time, we would recommend those who want a hearty good laugh to go and see them. Messrs Riley and Allen intend performing at the Head of the Bay, to-morrow, when an aftenoon entertainment will be given for children at 3 p.m., and will also appear at the schoolhouse, Little River, on Thursday, 17th inst. We desire to draw attention to the advertisement elsewhere convening a meeting of those interested in cricket.
