It is semi-officially stated here that a Russian expeditionary force was to have been despatched to Central Asia when relations between England and Russia were critical. The report of the Food Jury recommends gold medals to be awarded to the Melbourne and Sydney meat preserving companies ; also, other award, to Ballarat, Queensland, Adelaide, and Melbourne. August 16 The Australians are playing against Lancashire. The first innings of the County closed for 97. The Australians have one out for 100. Spofforth obtained nine wickets. The fielding of the Australians generally was good. An Austrian detachment was destroyed at Linbyngie. A severe epidemic, the yellow fever, is raging at New Orleans, Granada, and Memphis. . [Special to the Wellington Post.] London, Aug. 14. A most desperate and successful resistance is being made to the occupation of Bosnia by Austria. The Bosnians are completely triumphant, and havo compelled the whole of the Austrian divisions to retreat. The matter assumes a serious complexion as involving a danger of grave European difficulties and complications,
Aug. 15. In view of the Austrian occupation of Hertzegovina an agitation has been commenced in Italy, with the countenance of Signori Certi and Crispe, for the rectification of the frontier. Albania has been offered to Italy but refused, and a demand made for Trieste and the Istrian Peninsula. The Turkish officials are unable to maintain order in Canca, a fortified seaport in Crete, and the safety of the Christian population is threatened. Two Turkish men-of-war and English and French gunboats have entered the harbor to prevent an outbreak. Bismarck has sent an ultimatum that Turkey must comply with the Berlin treaty, and withdraw all support from the Bosnian insurgents. Turkey is •yielding. The English Government are in favor •of the establishment of a large arsenal in an inland town in New South Wales as the only means-of effective Australian •defence. August 16 The Queen's speech at the prorogation of Parliament stated that peace was satisfactory, and likely to be durable, =and that Turkish independence was -secured against aggression.
