LAND COMPENSATIONS.
To the Editor of the Akaroa Mail.
Sib,—l, some few weeks back, saw a paragraph in your paper in reference to the value of land in Little Akaloa. Now, Sir, I question whether the ratepayers are aware of the manner in which their funds are dribbling away. 'Tie true that a farmer claims fifty pounds compensation for an acre of land at the head of the valley, and it is known by many that the claim is a most exorbitant one, and I think, Sir, that the Board by looking more into this matter before they make any award would only be doing their duty to the ratepayers. It is, of course, only just that a man should be awarded at a fair and reasonable price, but in.this case it would appear more avarice than reason, for there is another public road running side by side with the one in question, with a creek between the two. In facl, Sir, taking the local position into consideration, the price demanded for the road is just twice the value of the
three or four acres that are cut off by the said road. So it is to be hoped that the Board will guard their funds with a jealous care, and get value for value. Yours, &c, HOPEFUL.
