MR M PHAIL IN EXPLANATION.

To the Editor of the Akaroa Mall.

Sir, —I see in your report of the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board, in your issue of the 23rd inst., that you report me as stating' in my interview with the Board that the Mount Bossu road "only benefited one person." What I stated to the Board was that, as the road was proposed to be put, it did not open up the country, and that if it had been run up the central spur it would have benefited the greatest number of settlers. I never stated that it was for one person. What 1- elderly object to isthe way the proposed road runs; the greater part of the money will bejjspent in compensation, andlittle or nothing left for making the road.

In reference to the question of my rates, your reporter is- equally at fault. I distinctly stated I had never received the notice for the past year that I was entered upon the valuation rol 1; the notice I received was for the current year. lat onoe objected, and was duly struck off the roll, as my property is quite a mile beyond the boundary of the Akaroa and Wainui Road District. The money was paid by my son under a misapprehension, and the handsome thing for the Board to do was to return it at once. As to the Clerk's explanation that tbe notice was served, it is simply absurd, as he was not in office until eight months after the legal time of serving the necessary notices. Youraj •&_.,

A. M'PHAIL.
