' A meeting of.the friends connected with the Congregational Church, Akaroa, was held in the ; Congregational , Hall, JolJie street, on Thursday evening J.as.tj.. when three members were chosen as trustees for
the Hall property. A Treasurer and Secretary were also appointed. The financial state of the church was considered satisfactory. It was agreed that in consequence of the Oddfellows' Hall not being completed, that the Oddfellows be allowed the use of the Hall as at present, until the Ist of September next. The question of holding a tea meeting was discussed, and it wasagreed to postpone ituntilthe spring. The question of forming , a church on the Congregational principle was postponed for further consideration. The meeting was opened and closed with prayer.
A special .meeting of the- Akaroa Borough Council was to have been held on Friday evening, last. The ; object of the meeting was to receive the report of a committee appointed to collect 4 evidence
concerning the now- ..notorious case of alleged suppression of correspondence, and to take action thereon. A " scene " ensued which baffles description, but the holding of the meeting was impossible. Another meeting is convened for this evening. We hope that this time the Council will do what is its manifest duty in the matter, , and determine-<to have the question thoroughly ventilated, and the blame affixed in the proper quarter.

Mr T. Brooks, Head of the Bay, Mr Gr. Checkley, Akaroa, Mr A. ,C. Knight, Wainui, and Mr W. 0. McDonald, Waiuui were the candidates- nominated, but the Returning Officer declaring Mr Brooks ineligible, that gentleman accordingly withdrew. At the nomination, the Chairman, having read the advertisement notifying the, ejection, jaid he was pleased to, see so many present, as, it showed that the ratepayers' J were waking up to feel an interest in public :matters. It wae: very different from a short time ago, when they had to scare up voters, and even then could scarcely get Enough to piropose and second nominations. , Mr Williams, seconded by Mr J. Curry, proposed Mr C.-".McDonald ; Mr W. Pawson, seconded by Mr G. Vogen,' proposed Mr T. Brooks, who was, however, found not to be on the roll, and he accordingly withdrew. Mr. H. Piper, in proposing Mr A. C. Knight, said he thought the ratepayers wore honored by his candidate coming forward.. He was an old Eoad Board member, having belonged to the Lincoln Board for some years. It was now not a question of a few pounds, but the management of large sums of money, and they wanted men of experience. This qualification Mr Knight possessed. MrT. S. Johnston seconded Mr Knight's nomination. Mr Whitfield, seconded by Mr. W." Pawson, proposed Mr G. Checkley. On - a show of hands being asked for, the following result was obtained:—Mr C. McDonald, 13 ; Mr A. C. Knight, 12 ; Mr G. Checkley, 4. A poll was demanded, at the conclusion of which the Keturning Officer read the following result:—Mr A. C. Knight, 67; Mr C. McDonald, 67 ; Mr G. Checkley, 19. Amidst great excitement, the Returning Officer declined to give his casting vote, and the election was therefore declared a failure, a fresh election to take .place that day three weeks. ,It is refreshing ,to report even -the appearance of any public interest in these elections, but we think the action of the Returning Officer should have been otherwise, and that in accordance with the Act, he should have his casting vote in favor of one or other of the candidates at; the head of the poll. : Mr A. C. Knight, in proposing a vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, thanked' his supporters for the high position they had placed him on the poll, which, being a "stranger to ,the;district, he took as a great compliment. He thought the Returning Officer had acted for the best, and he believed that at the next election they; would even place him higher. Mr C. McDonald seconded the vote to the Returning Officer, and expressed himself highly honored by being placed at the head of the poll, in "company with a gentleman of siich undoubted talenfand experience, as Mr Knight. If successful in his election on the next occasion, he would do his best fof' the district without partiality to any portion, more than another. The proceedings then terminated.
A special meeting of the Stewards* of; the Peninsula Jockey Club wae held'on Saturday last, at the Hill Top, to decide on the protest, McFarlane y. Sheenan— Present, Messrs Birdling, Sen:, (in the chair) Coop, S. Lee, and the Secretary. Letters were read from Mr B. Shadbolt, apologising for his non-attendance on account of illness, and from the Secretary of the Southhridge.Sports. Tjie question in dispute was the bonafide ownership of the horse Lemon Juice. The Stewards had before them a receipt purporting to be for the purchase; of the horse by Mr T. Sheenan from Mr T. Lemon, dated Nov. 1877. But on the other hand it appeared that the horse had run at the Head of the Bay, on December 26th, as " Bob," owned by John Manaon, and at Southbridge, January Ist, 1878, as " Lemon Juice," with the name of S. Lemon as owner. Under these circumstances the Stewards decided that the real ownership of the horse had not been proved, and that the money be impounded to the credit of the Club,
