A special meeting of the Committee of the Akaroa Literary Institute was held at the Library on Friday evening, to receive the report of the Sub-committee appointed to draw up a list of books to be ordered from England. The report, with list appended, having been read, was adopted, and the Treasurer was instructed to order the books by the San Francisco mail leaving on Wednesday, from Mudie, and Co., of London, with whose execution of previous orders the Committee expressed themselves much pleased. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Annand, that the sum of £32, together with the Sub-committee's list, be sent to Messrs Mudie and Co., of London, by the out-going mail, and, further, that the -sum of £3 be sent to,. Messrs, Bell and Bradfute; Edinburgh, >as an instalment On account of the Encyclopedia Britannica. The amount to. be; remitted being far short of the sum that would be required to get all the bpoks recommended by the public, some difficulty was' experienced in drawing up a list that should fairly represent all classes, of readers, but this end the Committee trust has been happily attained, at the same time that some standard works have been included for the reference department., A list of the books ordered will be posted in. the Library in a few days. The Committee then considered the growing practice of subscribers taking out books in the absence of the Librarian, and it was resolved that the attention of subscfibors be called to this breach of Rule 9.- Th*e leaving of slips on the Librarian's table giving titles of books taken out is open to the objection that they are sometimes lost, thus leaving nothing for the guidance of the Librarian. A suggestion that this difficulty would be met by keeping a book for subscribers to enter particulars in, was negatived on its being shown that at a former date such plan was tried, and resulted in failure from subscribers neglecting to make use of it The Committee, therefore, trust that members will in future adhere strictly to the Rule requiring all books to pass through the Librarian's hands.
