AKAROA COUNTY COUNCIL.

WEDHgsDAY, July 4. A special moetifig of tbis'body was held on the above.date, .at the Hill Top. Present'—Messrs Latter- (Chairman), Baker, Gebbie, Bradley, Hay, Priest, and D'alglish. SLAUGHTER-HOUSE LICENSES. The Chairman explained that the object of the meeting , was , , to frame, by-laws for the regulation of slaughter-houses. The by-laws of the Schryn County Council were jead* aiwi the, Council then went into .Committee to consider them seriatim. ■■ ' , ' _•■■:■ On resuming, •it was proposed by Mr Baker, seconded" by Mr Hay, and carried— " That the by-laws, as read and amended, be adopted." On the motion of. Mr Baker, the Chairman was authorised, to see the Superintendent of Police, and arrange, if possible, for the continuance of inspection of slaughter-houses by the police force. This terminated the business of the special meeting, and the ordinary meeting was then held. The minutes of the last meeting were read and continued, also those of the special meeting held on 10th June last. COUNTY ENGINEER. Correspondence was read, from which it appeared that Mr Brown had failed to procure his certificate, and consequently that he was unable to take up his appointment: . APPLICATION FOR ADVANCE. The Chairman stated that, for,, the information of the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board, he had made enquiries. as to the state of the case in reference to St. John's land. As far as he was able to learn, there were no liabilities in connection with the land except the £300. < lie believed that on this money being paid, the Road Board could take possession of the road. APPOINTMENT OF ENGINEER. On this question coming up for discussion, a fresh application was received from H. H. Fenton, Esq., enclosing his certificate. Mr Hay thought they should advertise again. Mi- Gebbie concurred. : The Chairman said works were pressing, and a good deal of time would be lost. ~ Mr Hay had heard it stated that if they engaged Mr Fenton, the Akaroa Eoad Board would not make use of his services. The Chairman eaid it might be open for consideration whether they should make such an appointment at all. They had no funds to pay him themselves, and if the Eoad Boardswould not contribute, it would be unwise to incur the responsibility, v f-Mr pioposed, -and Mr Baker seconded, the appointment of Mr Fenton, conditionally on his finding his own office. . , ,

Mr Hay moved that fresh applications be invited. Mr Priest seconded the proposition. ' ' ' '

PIGEON BAY JETTY. , ' A letter was received from the Pigeon Bay Road Board, asking that the control of wharves and jetties in their district be handed over to tHein. , ■ The Chairman was instructed to write to the Board, asking for a proposed tariff of wharfage fates. ■■■■■■■'■■■ PIGEON BAY EOAD DIVERSION. On the motion o£-Mr-Baker,-seconded by Mr Gebbie, it was resolved—"That in accordance ' with.. the application of tho Pigeon Bay Road Board, and with the provisions of; thei Public ""Wctks Act, section ,93,; sub-septibns JlO and 11, the road , through' sections 2493, 3076, 6580, and 6709, Pigeon Bay, be closed and cease to be a public highway." ■•'•'•■ , OLD COMPENSATION CLAIMS^ The chairman was authorised to forward a list of compensation claims due at the time of the Abolition of Provinces to W. Montgomery, Esq., M.H.R.', requesting him to use his influence in Parliament :tp, obtain a vote for their liquidation. SHEEP AND FENCING BILLS. The suggestions of the late conference on these bills were considered and met the approval of the Council. : The Council then adjourned to Thursday, August Ist at the same place at 11 a.m.
