ROAD BOARD COMPENSATION.

To the Editor of the Aharoa Mail.

Sir,— '" Ratepayer " appears in happy ignorance of all that hasappeared in the columns of your valuablepaper. He says no charge has been made. I know that— not a direct one-—or it would possibly have been libel. But I differ from " Ratepayer" as, to the mild way the requeste have been made ; they are more like insinuations againsta member of the Road Board, and it so happens I was the only member through whose land a road diversion is being made, consequently " Ratepayer" must certainly have known for whom the cap was intended. And as to "Ratepayer" considering my letter an insult to the public, it may be, if asking two or three anonymous writers for their names is a public insult, but I submit under the circumstances I had a right to do as I did. " Ratepayer " is in a dilemma, whether there is any wrong or not, and asks for a full and open publication of the whole. t I refer -him to Mr • Duxbury's ljetterj which will probably ease his mind with'reference to the £100 ( 0 or £2000 of public money; and no doubt "Ratepayer" is aware there are other details before paying such as survey, arbitration, &c. ; all these have been done .at regular sittings of the Road Board, therefore " Ratepayer " fails to prove the correctness of his assertion that information has been, bo strangely withheld. Although I have retired into private life, I shall always feel it a duty and pleasure to assist in any way that will, tend to the advancement of this district, and, in conclusion, I beg to inform " Ratepayer " that ib do not intend to be snuffed out by any,, anonymous writer. , .

; ' ' ' Yours, &c, I HENRY PIPER. ' Duvauchelle's Bay, July 4.
