VIOLETS.

The faint indescribable odour , Of a scent wafted to me to-day, Has stirred in my memory visions Of times that have passed away ; It seems to have carried me backwards With a rush like a tidal wave ; And I felt the fresh perfume of flowers That I planted one day on her grave. I promised to plant round her last bed, The flowers she had loved through life; The flowers, that she said she would wear in her hair On the day when I made her my wife. But they are, alas! a fit emblem Of my love, so beauteous and fair ; God has plucked her and borne her to Heaven, In beauty to bloom ever there. X. T. P.
