ORIGINAL POETRY.

TO. A MOURNING MOTHER. The flowers of fairest form are first to fade, The brightest blooms drop soonest from the tree ; The loveliest of the creatures God has made, ■ -• Ephemera, are scarce seen ere they flee. 'Tis well it is so, for earth's tainted air Will leave its traces on the richest hues; And butterflies, the fairest of things fair, Their beauty-dust at lightest touch will lose. Then weep not, mother, that your God has ta'en The tender blossom from your household tree, Ere ever its fair innocence had been \ Robbed of its freshness by impurity. Think of life's troubles, its corroding care, The bitter anguish bora of our own sin, The weary weight, of woe till death we bear, The quivering agonies our hearts within. Rather than weep, then, praise the God of love, That has ta'en your fondly cherished one Away from sin, to live in light above— In lands alight with love beyond the sun. X. T. P.
