ST. PETER'S, AKAROA.

A vestry meeting in connection with the above, was held on Tuesday evening, the 14th instant. Present—The Rev. P. C. Anderson (in the chair), Messrs Westenra, Wagstaff, Henning, Nicholls, and Penlington.

Letters, apologising for their absence, were received from Messrs A. I. M'Gregor, and H. Watkins.

After the minutes of the last meeting had been read and confirmed, the correspondence between the Rev. Incumbent and tbe Bishop's Secretary re the Church of the Resurrection. Duvauchelle's Bay, was read, from'whtch it appeared that, with the special grant from tlie S. P. C. X., tbe debt on the church would he extinguished . A letter to that effect was written and signed by the church officers, for transmission to the Bishop's Commissary.';'-' ■;-.. •.. :;;.,lay; header. The consideration of the appointment of a lay reader for the town of Akaroa was then proceeded with, the necessity of the appointment being forcibly brought forward by the Rev. Incumbent and the Churchwardens, and instanced by ; the collapse of the services on Sunday morning last. Owing to the impossibility of the gentleman attending wbo had promised to conduct them, shewing at once the necessity of having a lay reader locally appointed. Mr Wagstaff said, that from conversations he had had with many of the parishioners, befell sure that if Mr Nicholls could be induced to allow himself to be nominated, it would give, he thought, very general satisfaction.

Mr Nicholls replied, that he had some diffidence in acceding to the request, but if it was the unanimous wish of the vestry, and they thought his appointment would be satisfactory to the parishioners, he was willing to accept it.

After Borne further discussion, it was unanimously resolved, that Mr Alfred Nicholls be recommended to His Lordship the Bishop as lay reader, and the necessary papers relating to his appointment were at once filled up. nominators. . The subject of the appointment of nominators for the parish was then brought forward. " . It was -proposed by Mr Henning, and seconded by Mr Penlington, that the Churchwardens Messrs Westenra, Wagstaff, E. C. Latter, and A. C. Knight, be the nominators for the parish.—Carried. parish liabilities. A list of accounts owing by the parish was laid on the table, the Chairman urging very strongly that some steps should be taken to liquidate them. It was proposed by Mr Nicholls, and seconded by Mr Penlington, that a gift auction ,should be held in July next, in the Town Hall, or other suitable place, to raise funds to liquidate the outstanding liabilities of the parish.—Carried. Parishioners and others interested, are requested to contribute articles of any description for the purpose. EVENING ENTERTAINMENT. Resolved—That the following gentletlemen be requested to form a committee, to organise a series of evening entertainments :—Rev. P. C. Anderson, H. B. Bridge, A. I. McGregor, A. Nicholls, H. H. Fenton, J. Daly, — Henning, and W. Sims, with power to add to their number.

The Churchwardens were instructed to have a gate put at the N. E. corner of the Church ground, to facilitate the egress therefrom.

The proceedings then terminated
