AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Wednesday, May 1. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs Sunckell, Billens, O'Reilly, Cullen, Meech, Penlington, and Annand. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the following letters were then read : — correspondence. From the Chairman of the County Council, in reply re expenses in connection with Sir G. Grey's visit, stating that the Council .vere unable to entertain the request, as there were no funds available for the purpose. From Mr 11. Wagstaff, tendering his resignation as a member of the Borough Council.

Cr Meech proposed, seconded by Cr Cullen, that the resignation be accepted, and the necessary steps taken to fill the vacancy. The Mayor said he would like to see some further notice taken of the resignation. Cr Wagstaff had been connected with the Council since its formation, and had in many ways proved himself a useful member. He would have preferred that some member had suggested that Mr Wagstaff be asked to reconsider his resignation. The motion was then put and carried.

From Mr J. Beecher, requesting permission to break up the road way opposite Bruce's Hotel, in Bruce's terrace, to enable him to cleanse the waterpipes leading from his tanks. The required permission was granted.

From the Colonial Secretary, drawing attention to sections 184, 199, 200,, and 201 of the "Municipal Corporations Act, 1876," with reference to the width of private streets, Courts,, Alleys, &c. WORKS COMMITTEE. Cr Meech, Chairman of the above, stated that certain members of the committee had made a tour of inspection round the Borough, and had found many things wanting immediate attention, but they were powerless, without the necessary funds. PAYMENTS. An account of 4s, due to J. Maitby, was passed for payment. Cr Cullen drew attention to the dangerous state of Fair's bridge, through the breaking, to all appearances intentional, of the side hand-rails. Cr O'Reilly drew attention to the bad state of Jollie-street, opposite Mr Holding's residence. The work was ordered to be done, and enquiries to be made with regard to Farr's bridge. Cr Meech moved that, with respect to the manner in which tlie business connected with the Borough had been conducted by the Mayor— The Mayor here interrupted Cr Meech, as he was out of order, his motion coming under the head of " Extraordinary business," of which due notice should be given. Cr Meech : " Very extraordinary for you, your Worship, doubtless, but • The Mayor again reminded Cr Meech that he was out of order, and that he would not allow him to proceed. Cr O'Reilly wished to know what was ordinary business. The Mayor explained that " ordinary business was such as was likely to occur within the Bom ugh." The matter was then allowed to stand over. Cr O'Reilly's motion, that the Post-master-General be asked to provide a letter delivery within the Borough, was then put and carried. It was resolved to write to the Colonial Secretary re the Bye-laws. Cr Meech, at the close of the business, tabled the following notice of motion : — " That this Council, having in view the general conduct of the business of this Council since the election of the present Mayor to office, expresses its dissatisfaction with the same, and with him as its head, and with a,view to place the conduct of the Council on a satisfactory footing, respectfully requests him to resign the office ot Mayor of the Borough of Akaroa."
