A special meeting of the Akaroa Borough Council was held last evening. The minutes of the previous special meetings were read and confirmed. His Worship the Mayor informed the Council that the claim for which a summons had been issued against the Council was settled.
The little smntner-house erected in the domain grounds is now thoroughly completed, and reflects credit on the builder,Mr Cullen. We have previously ailuded to the mistake of the building being too stiff, and stable-like, and so different from the rustic arbour one would expect to see in grounds of this description, but apart from that objection, the summer-house is all that could be desired, and will, no doubt, in the welcome rest nnd shade that it will afford, be a popular resort of persons frequenting the domain during the summer months. It is to be hoped that young people will respect the motive and purpose'for which the building has been erected, and will abstain from desecrating or injuring it by any filthy and senseless larrikinism such as we had occasion to draw attention to in a previous iasue.
The adjourned meeting of the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board took place yesterday. We are compelled to hold over our report of the proceedings, which shall appear in our next issue. The date to which the County Council adjourned was inadvertently omitted from our report of the last meeting of that body. The next meeting will take place on Thursday, the 23rd May, at the usual time , and place.
By a notice which appears elsewhere, we observe that Mr Brooks, of the.Somerset Hotel, Head of the Bay, intends giving a ball to-morrow (Wednesday) evening. As the price of tickets is extremely moderate, no doubt a large attendance may be expected.
A "scratch" meeting was held at the Somerset Hotel, Head of the Bay, on Friday last, at wbiclij.it was resolved to organise some rural sports to take place at the Head of the Bay, on the Queen's Birthday. Mr Lee said that there was a small sum of money in hand (he thought about £12) available for the'purpose. He had no doubt that a decent sum could be collected by a canvass of the district. Mr Piper thought rural sportn should take precedence of horse, races. . Mr Williams supported the same view. Finally. Messrs Lee, Williams, Brooks, Piper, and Shadbolt were appointed a Committee to arrange preliminaries, and report at a meeting to be held on Saturday next, notice of which appears in our advertising columns. Mr G. Porter was appointed Honorary Secretary. Over £6 was subscribed in the room. We hope to see a good day's sport

Tlie burgesses of Akaroa will shortly be called upon to elect a member to the Borough Council to supply the vacancy caused by the resignation of Or Wagstafi:. As yet, no official notification of the election has taken place, but it is not too soon for steps to be taken to induce some eligible candidates to come forward. We hope that it will not be found impossible to procure some thoroughly suitable representative. If the loan project is carried out, the Council will shortly have some very important matters to decide upon. It is no use for the ratepayers to grumble at the action of the Council ; the remedy is in their own hands, by putting in men in whom they can have full confidence. We hear one or two names already whispered, and it behoves ail who have the interests of the Boroiigh. ; :pt heart to be on the alert. "^
We have to. remind our readers of the conversazione, advertised to take place this evening in the Town Hall, at seven o'clock, in connection with the annual Easter Meeting of the members of the Church of England. We understand that, after the parish business has been transacted, an interesting lecture together with songs and readings will be given, and that a very pleasant and instructive evening may be anticipated. As the charge for admission is so low as to be merely nominal, the attendance should be a large
The second trial of Ryan for the murder of Daniels, at Kumara, was to lie commenced at Hokitika on Monday, before Justice Richmond.
