(From the Press Agency.) Wellington, April 22. It is understood that one of the first measures to be introduced by Government next session will be the Brewers and Publicans Bill. The object of the measure will be to prevent brewers owning hotels. Christchurch, April 22. The Autumn meeting commenced today. The weather was beautiful and the attendance large. The St. Leger Stakes, of 150 soys, was won by Mr Webb's Jangler, with Mr Mallock's Foul Play second, won by one length; time,3 mm. 27-_- sec. Trump Card and Standard Bearer were scratched. Champagne Stakes of 150- soys, with sweepstakes of 15 soys—Mr Redwood's Natator, 1 ; Mr Poynter's York, 2 ; Mr Mallock's Nemo, 3. Atlantic, Merlin, and Waitaki also ran. This was a splendid race, and was won by a length. Nemo ran off the course in the straight, or might perhaps have won. Time, 1 mm. 17| sec. Great Autumn Handicap of 500 soys, added to a sweepstakes of 10 soys.— Longlands, 1 ; Maritana, 2; Jangler, 3 ; "Templeton, 4. Ariel, Titania, Bide-a-wee, Mufti, and Oberon also ran. Bribery, Foul Play, and Luna were scratched. Betting, 2to 1 agst Longlands, 3 to 1 agst Ariel and Templeton. Longlands won by a short head, after a magnificent struggle and hard whipping. Time, 2 mm. 31-_- sec. Free Handicap—Luna, 1 ; Ran-off, 2 ; Undine. 3. Won by half a length. Time, 1 mm. 7£ sec. j
