SALE OF THE AHURIRI ESTATE
. The fine freehold estate known as the Ahuriri, the property of Mr Richard FJemming, was submitted to public competition yesterday. The property consists of 4167 acres of freehold land, is distant about 15 miles from Christchurch, and was offered in seventeen lots of various sizes. The sale took place in the commodious room of Messrs Miles, Hassal, and Co., Hereford street west, and the occasion was marked by a large attendance, spirited bidding, and high prices. The competition was ..keen, and the sale was got through rapidly .considering the number of lots that had to few dealt with. The sale was by Messrs E. Wilkin and Co., in conjunction with Messrs Miles, Hassal, and Co., and the o'ffieaating auctioneer was Mr Tabart, of vthe former firm. This is the first land sale that Mr Tabart has held on this side of the island, and though of long experience, it must be gratifying to him that he made his debut on a Christchurch rostrum under such favourable circumstances. The prices realised are the best encouragement that can be given to the cutting up of properties, and the simplest and most effective way of "burstingup" the big estates. The land so subdivided will be many times more good to the country ■when unlocked than it is in its present state. It may be well to point out that in this, and also in other provinces, whenever a really good property is offered, there are . plenty of people to buy it. This has been the ease in Canterbury for several years back, and yesterday's sale was no exception. The buyers also were people conversant with property, having made all they posessed on land in Canter- ' bury. The speculating element was very • slight, and almost the whole of the land ■ went into the posession of horny-handed ' farmers, men who, if they are as general!}* j considered hard-fisted, must have seen they were getting value for their money before they invested at top prices. The following is a detail of the Bale : —
