"WIDOW'S GRIEVANCES."

TO THE EDITOR Off THE AKAROA MAIL. Sir, —I was rather amused to notice in your issue of the Bth instant, that '• a widow" was objecting to the private education of girls being conducted in the Government school, and by the Government schoolmaster. Thinking over the pro's and coil's of the case, it flashed across my mind that perhaps the absence of some of the alphabet from the signature of the teacher might possibly be the cause of the objection. If this is so. it must bo remembered that in the colony there have been known instances where the University Calendar, together with the capital letters attached to names therein is often made use of to the detriment of the cause of education. It is also, however, a well known fact, that those who sail under false colours, may at any time be required to show the authorised code. The literal continuation of many a man's name in Nsw Zealand, are about of as much value as the " lion"' prefixed to a member of the Legislative Council. For instance, B.A. out here may stand for baneful animal, as well as be a symbol of a university degree, and in most instances the first mentioned explanation of the letters is the correct one. It is comforting, at any rate, to think that a man may arrive at even that reputation by degrees. Yours, &c. BURGESS.
