The Christmas decorations at St. Peter's, Akaroa, have this year surpassed every effort in that way on former occasions On entering the church the most callous observer of the picturesque and beautiful, could hot but be struck with the general effect. ; In the body of the church -the usual display of evergreens was placed, but it was insitle the chancel and about the communion rails that the greatest care had. evidently been taken, and the greatest taste and skill shewn jn the decoration. Across the archway 'of the. chancel hung festoons of evergreens, while on each side of the chancel and the organ loft, beautiful coloured flowers were dotted here .aiid there among the green. The .communion-table itself was very handsomely ornamented with vases of flowers, while the sacred monogram I. H. S worked in leaves in front of the cloth, made a most pretty finish to the whole. Altogether, those ladies and gentlemen to whose taste and deft fingers we are indebted for so charming a scene, are de*-, serving of the highest praise, not so much for their willingness to assist in necking out the church at this festival season, as for the skill .with which they executed it.

A sad accident which is likely to have a fatal termination happened yesterday, about?. p;'m.,to Mr;J. Bunny, an old resident of Akaroa. near .the; Bey. Mr Aylmer's paddock. It seems that the injured man in ■company with Mr F; Arming, and his man, wasdriving a cow up Aylmer's valley road, when she attempted to jump a fence into Mr Beccher's paddock, and, in so doing got caught and held by one of her hind legs; a rope was got to extricate her from tht position she was in, and whilst endeavouring to-place this on the animals head she severely gored Mr Bunny, one other bonis entering hi-j abdomen, neat the groin, aiid ripping his entrails. Dr. Guthrie was promply in attendance, but gives little hope of the nnfoitunate man' l - reco\ery. From a correspondent, we hear that the Rev. W. 11. pooper, late Im .unbent of Si Peter's hat£ wHJßjrl»aken the charge oi Cassilis, Turee/', ,l)arby, Coolah, and Denison town, Njfe. W. for twelve monthunder the BLhop of Newcastle. «-In one, of bur recent issues we publishedan obituary notice of the lamented loss in the ship Avalanche, of a nephew of W. Montgomery, JEsq., M." H. R .In eon-, nection 'with this sad event we clip the following from the Wangaani .Chronicle of the 20th jnstant :—We* hear it is the intention of Mrs' H. Montgomery, of Opiu, Upokongaro to have a memorial window placed in the Upokongaro Chur&h in memory of her son, who was lost in the Avalanche. Mrs Montgomery is at present in the old country, her eon, who was on his return to the colony, having accompanied her thither.

If doing instead of talking deserves to succeed then does Mr O'Brion in his aerated water business, deserve to receive the support of both public and publicans. The requisite plant and material, for this new industry, only arrived in Akaroa on the 24th inst., and on the 26th Mr O'Brion was supplying orders. In connection with this promptitude, a facetious friend of ours as ks—" Am I dreaming ; can such things be; stands Akaroa were it was ? .

The Little Akaloa School broke up for the holidays on the"2oth instant, on which day the children, attending the school, were examined by the Rev. D. 0. Hampton* who expressed himself, as highly satisfied with the progress made by them in their studies. A sum of' money has been collected for the purchase of prizes,.that were to be given yesterday, -«t the breaking-up treat which the parents am 1 friends of the juveniles annually give theni: *

The many friends readers of MrG. Scarbrough, will, with us, be sorry to heart-hat that is seriously unwell. We hope, 7 however, that .Mr Scarbrough's illness is but of a temporary nature, and trust to have the pleasure of soon recording his restoration to perfect health.

A- match between the Akaroa Cricket club and the Little Akaloa knights of the willow, which was to have come off to-day, has been unavoidably postponed owing to the absence of the majority of players composing the Akaroa team. We understand that this inability to meet their engagement 'has gone far to bring the Akaroa cricketers into disfavour with the Little Akaloa .men, but we trust all differences may soon be made' right and that some future friendly match, toward' the end of the season, may. settle any feeling of mistaken motives that exists on either side.
