MEETING OF ST. PETER'S VESTRY.
A meeting of the Vestry of St. Peter s Church was held last Tuesday evening, at the Parsonage, the members present being the Rev. P. C. Anderson. (chairman), Messrs Wagstaff, churchwarden, M'Gregor, and Harlock, vestrymen. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.
The chairman reported that he, had held a meeting of the members of the Church of the Resurrection, Head of the Bay, and a working committee had been elected for the purpose of carrying out the work of the Church at the Head of the Bay, subject generally to the direction of the Vestry of St. Peter's as required by the Synod regulations. The members of committee consisted of Messrs Curry, Blythen, Barwick, and Pawson, who were to meet on a future day and report, a staong expression
of opinion being given that this Church should be the centre of a mission district, and have a curate of its own, leaving the Incumbent of Akaroa free to attend to bis own more immediate duties. At the meeting of the member's of the above Church, the rev. chairman mentioned, that a request had been v niade to have one of their number, Mr Blythen, licensed; as a iay reader, which had been forwarded to the Bishop, and his.sanction had been received. In connection with this church, a ladies' committee are organising a sale of fancy work for the purpose of clearing off the debt on the new Church building, and the Vestry intimated their willinsrness to forward the matter in every way in their power.
In regard to the matter of collections for church purposes in Barry's Bay, it was resolved to leave the matter entirely in the hands of Mr Latter as before, and that no attempt be.made by the churchwardens to divide the sums received from that quarter, unless specially so endorsed by Mr Latter. The question of a right of way through the Hospital grounds, sections 55 and 97, from sections belonging to the church, Nos. 53 and 54 to the creek, was brought under the notice of the meeting. Mr McGregor said he had been a member of the Vestry for the past six years, and it was the first he had ever heard of the matter, and was afraid the right was a purely imaginary one. The Rev P. C. Anderson was instructed to make all necessary enquiries, and report to next meeting of the Vestry. In regard to the grant in aid for Sunday Schools, the chairman was requested to make such enquiries as would set the matter at rest.
A letter was received from Canon Cotterill, requesting a roll of all members of the Church, to be forwarded to him before the second week in January. It was resolved that every means be taken to complete the roll before the time, and that the matter be left in the hands of the chairman and Mr Harlock to make the roil as accurate as possible. Mr Harlock moved—" Thatitbea special instruction to the churchwarden of St. Peter's, that they communicate with the Committee at the Bay to see that the rent is duly paid for the cottage on the church property there, and also to collect all arrears of same at once, and in the event of the present occupants not paying, to have them turned out, and cottage re-let." The correspondence of the church-, wardens since last meeting was read and approved of.
It was resolved that the lay members of the Vestry meet at the Parsonage on Monday, at 3 p.m., to go into committee on matters of finance.
