Mr Black's yacht, the " Venture," which has been undergoing certain alterations to enable her to compete in the Lyttelton yacht race this year, was successfully launched on Wednesday evening, far more interest being evinced by the public in this event than in the mayoral election on the same day. The -Venture" has a very pretty appearance ion the Avater, and when rigged and ballasted down bids fair to look as neat a little craft as one would wish to see. We sincerely trust Mr Black's energy and spirit may be amply rewardedby a long list of successes.

We understand that Mr J. Donovan the contractor for the new Oddfellow's Hall, has signed the contract, and Mr Simpson's specifications, thebuildingto be completed within seven months'froni 'the date' of signature, so that we may shortl}* expect to see this welcome addition to own public edifices commenced.

We notice in a recent issue of the Lytteiton Times that the 17th of December is to be proclaimed as a public holiday throughout Canterbury, in lieu of the 16th which falls on a Sunday.

We desire to draw attention to the sale of sites for the erection of bootha oh the reserve opposite Bruce's Hotel, on,the day of the Regatta. The sale will take place at the offices of Messrs XBridge and Bushell to-morrow, Saturday,'" and , considering the valuable nature of. these sites, we hope to see some spirited bidding. •-. •

A meeting of committee of the Akaroa Regatta was held at Wagstaff's Hotel, on Tuesday evening last. There was a fair attendance of members, and a good deal of business was. transacted, notably, the revising of the rules, and the fixing of courses for various races. No effort is being spared to get a steamer laid on between Lyttelton and this port on the day of the regatta, and we trust that the negotiations may prove successful. The next meeting takes place on the 4th instant, at Bruce's Hotel

We hear that the Summit-road between Little Akaloa and Okain's Bay is badly blocked up in a few places by trees.carelessly burned down and fallen by those employed on .Mr Piper's land there. It is to be hoped that that gentleman will ask his employees .to remove these obstructions, as they are not only inconvenient, but

An entertainment took place in' the old school-room, Okain's Bay, on Wednesday evening last. After the progiamme, which consisted of several good songs, recitations, readings, &c, had been satis factorily gone through, the Rev. D. 0. Hampton gave a short review of, t\\e f Church work which' had been done in the parish during the past "half-year. The proceeds bf the entertainment, amounting to £2 55., are to be devoted toward \pamt-,-ing the church fence. From an official advertisement which appears -in the Christchurch. dailies, we learn that the total amount of''Canterbury subscriptions, towards file Indian Famine Relief Fund, is £5194 Is lid. The' election for the Mayoralty of the Borough of Akaroa took'place ou Wednesday last, the proceedings being characterised by an utter absence of any excitement or public interest. A fe.w/ of the Burgesses collected in front of the Council's offices at the hour for closing the .poll, but otherwise there was nothing to mark that an election was going oh. At about a quarter after six o'clock; the Returning Officer read the result of the poll,- which was as follows:—Jacob Christian Waeckerle, 36, Henry Green Watkins, 45, the latter gentleman being declared duly elected. Mr Watkins in a brief address, thanked the Burgesses for the high position they had placed him on the poll. He was aware that an interest had been working against him throughout in the person of a gentleman who was then walking away down the. road. He was assured that many others would have voted for him, had they'not previous! y have promised their support to Mr Waeckerle, who he believed had been deceived by many ofyhis promised supporters, and so led to believe'that' he would be elected. Mr Waeckerle said that as the [defeated candidate he had. to thank those who had voted for him. He had acted fairly throughout the contest, and had never tried to influence anyone whom he knew was pledged to, Mr Watkins. As regards the business, of the Council, he would do his duty as a member of that body, as he had done before, but of course he would have preferred to be Mayor. However he would try again next year. The proceedings then terminated with a vote of tlnVhks to the returning officer.

There is a rumour afloat, emanating from Wellington, that Mr Montgomery, is likely to join the present Ministry as Treasurer, owing to Mr Larnach's medical advisers recommending that gentleman to withdraw himself from the harassing cares ot office, which, are having an injurious effect upon his'he-dth./XX' . ~-• ■

,The rage for .fishing,, off. the ..wharves will no doubt beoome, is " all the go" after the unusually large amount of rock-cod caughti'yesterday. One gentleman caught Over fifty of these, fish in about an hour's time," literally pulling them in as fast as he threw the line out while some hundred odd must have been caught by other people later on in the day. Altogether fish seem to, be more abundant in the harbour this year.

In this issue we commence a series of contributions termed " Gossippy notes from the East," andjn our nextpublication we purpose publishing an account of Honolulu and its envfrons. which has been contributed and written by a late resident of tho Peninsula. •■!-■"
