PARTY STRIFE,
TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL. Sir, —Once more I must ask you to allow me space for a few remarks, which I venture to hope may reach some of my fellow-citizeiis who will be called upon to record their votes at the ensuing mayoral election. These remarks are elicited by what took place at the nomination the other day, when it became only too evident that the interests of the Borough held a secondary position in the minds of candidates, as compared with the interests of the respective " ends "of the town. Sir, I was glad to read a leader in a recent issue of.your journal, urging the burgesses to vote independently, and for the best nian, irrespective of local or personal considerations. That advice was sound and good ; and, in spite of the attempt to stir up a party cry, I trust that the good sense of the citizens will cause them to follow it at the coming election. Anything more fatal to the prosperity of small towns it is difficult to imagine than a cry of any one portion against the other! Business, improvements, advancement, are all retarded by the inane, senseless, dissention and obstruction that ensue from such a strife. Two candidates have been nominated for the office of Mayor of this Borough— let each Burgess vote for the one whom he considers will best perform the duties of that office, and lei each "end" work unitedly and with zeal for the common good. , ~ 7 . Jqurs, &cl, " } BURGESS.
