AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD.

Saturday, October 20, 1877. Present:—Messra Piper (chairman), Williams, and Shadbolt. ONUKU BOAD. Mr Moore waited on the Board to explain his letter in reference to his price for the land through which the proposed Onuku road would pass. He thought the Board had not understood that more land would be cut off than was actually required for the road, and that the land so cut off would be useless to him, and on that account he had charged more for it. After some discussion, it was agreed that Mr Moore should write to the Board, stating his willingness to submit the matter to arbitration.

LONG BAY ROAD. Mr Inman then interviewed the Board, and stated that he was willing to submit the question of compensation for hfs land cut off by this road to arbitration, and that he appointed Mr Bridge as his arbitrator. After some discussion with regard to the Board purchasing the land so. cut off, the price of the same to be. include*! in the arbitration, an arrangement was come to, and Mr Iriman retired. Mr Tizzard waited on the Board for thepurpose of asking them if they would assist him in forming a road to his place. The clerk was instructed to inspect the work to be done, and arrange with Mr Tizzard. Mr E.Chappell called upon the Board for information with regard to the fencing of the Long Bay road through his property, and stated that the contractors' seemed to think that they were not required to erect the fences though his land. On reference to the contract it was found that the contractors were bound to fence. CORRESPONDENCE. From E. Lelievre stating that he would accept £40 for the land through which the Long Bay road passes, the Board to fence both sides of the road, which was not to be opened until the fences were put tip.— The matter was postponed till next ingFrom T. Feltham, drawing attention to the state of the road to his property.—The clerk was instructed to visit it, and report. From W. Widdicombe, offering to spread metal at Barry's Bay, also asking permission to mow the grass on the main road outside Messrs Piper's arid Birdling's sections, and offering to pay for the same. From H, Worsley, stating that if the Board would form a road 8 feet wide, starting from Mr W. Thomas' house to the top boundary of D. Curry's land, he would guarantee to do half the work or pay half the expense.—The clerk was instructed to visit and report. -

From J. GJynan, stating that he had obtained the services of a surveyor, and had found that the road encroached on his property 3;} perches, and that for any alteration the Board might make he "would take a fair valuation. The present road, however, he wished to keep for the convenience of his cattle going backwards and forwards. ,

From J. Porter, stating thati in regard to the Onuku road, the section, through wl ich the proposed alteration passed, was leased for a term of ten years, and that under the circumstances he did not know how to act. Consideration of this matter was deferred;

From E. Harrington, saying he was not in a position at present to pay the demands of the Board.

From Gr. Cossar, asking to be informed whether the Board intended to connect the ends of the road in Pawson's valley, as he could not get to his land since the owners of the intervening land were fencing.—The matter was postponded till next meeting. A telegram was received from Mr Montgomery, stating that he had received the copy of a letter to the Minister for Public Works, and.that he would give the matter his best attention.

From the Little Eiver Road Board' acknowledging receipt of the Board's letter oi the 2nd instant-and saying that inreference to the appropriation of the special grant to be spent in this district, the Board were of opinion that the proposed road 'should join the Akarpa side at the Wainui' pass, and from thence proceed down the: Okute valley,■joining the Christchurch and: Akaroa road over the bridge opposite Little River School. ' That the Board were willing to. co-operate with a view to cittaiiiing.the desired end, but that they were at present in the dark as to the sum available for the purpose, an! that they would be glad to receive any information or suggestion on the matter

A memorial was received from the Rev. D. 0. Hampton'and others calling attention to the; state of the road between the Head ■of the Bay and the Pigeon Bay, finger post, and requesting that the 'road be formed to .join the formation of the Pigeon Bay road so as to make it passable,in winter. ..' ■ : ',' ■.
