NEWS BY THE SUEZ MAIL.

The mail brings English news to August 31. Thomas Hendlej, barrister, who lately died in Northumberland, bequeathed £200,000 for the endowment. of aJßish.oprio for that county. ,He was. a- large colliery owner. i On Oct. 1, all General officers who have attained the age of 70 will be placed on the retired list. The list includes all surviving veterans of the Peninsular and Waterloo campaigns.and nearly all brigade and divisional commanders in the Crimea. Amongst the Generals are Sir Richard England, Sir W. J.-Codrington, Lord Lucan, Sir VV. T. Knollys, Sir W. R Williams o£ Kars, Lord Rokeby, Sir Edward Sabini, Sir Patrick Grant, Lord Airey, and Sir Thomas Simpson Pratt, who commanded the forces in New Zealand some years ago. The Channel fleet arrived at Forbury from Vigo on August 27. A trial trip of the Shannon, a new powerful ironclad of a new class, which came off at Plymouth on the 20th, was not a success. She is overmasted, and the engines did not work satisfactorily. The Duke of Edinburgh is visiting Athens. The Duchess is still in Eussia. The most disastrous floods known for years devastated South Wales. Bail way traffic was suspended, and the crops for a circuit of fifty miles were destroyed.
