Inspector Thomson has telegraphed t<> Wellington for instructions as to whether =he_ghj]J, foljow up the .Mapris who rescued the prisoner "from tlie constables and beat tljcin at Whangamata yesterday. An outrage was committed by the Maoiis on SSunday at a settlement on theEast Coast, near Matora. Sergeant Russell and Constable Gordon, accompanied by a man named M'Geehan, as guide, proceeded from Ohinetnurf to arrest two Natives named Makutu and Te Nohi, for horse stealiug.' They found the latter, and producing their warrant were proceeding to put the handcuffs on when they were, assaulted by a score of Natives, and the prisoner ran away. The constables gave chase and caught the prisoner in a creek. They were again set upon and beaten and held down in the creek until the prisoner, Te Nohi, escaped. Several shots were fired to intimidate the natives, but it was no good. The constables got away, secured their horses, and returned to Ohuiemuri beaten and bruised, and minus one revolver and a pair of handcuffs. ■ ' ■• -i'"' October 17, Captain Carey's house at Onehungft was totally destroyed by fire. It burned so rapidly that there was hardly time to get the children out. The house and furniture was insured for £450 in the National. His loss is very heavy. Wellington, October 16. Mr James Mackay was summoned to-day by Mr Hislop, M.H.R., for assault. The case was adjourned till to-morrow for the production of witnesses, Mr Mackay being bound over to keep the peace in the meantime. Mr George Proudfoot's criminal case was not finished to-night, and will probably occupy the whole of to-morrow.
