MEETING AT LITTLE RIVER.
A meeting of the Trustees of the Little River Cemetery Reserve was held on the 28th ult. There were present — Messrs. R. Powrie, W. Greenland, G. R. Joblin and W. Coop.
At the instance of Messrs. Coop and Greenland, Mr Powrie was elected chairman.
It was alleged that the Cemetery Reserve is well situated, but that no road to it had been formed, neither was it cleared or fenced, and yet it was found necessary to use it. The first grave having been prepared for the little son of Mr G. W. Joblin, who unhappily lost his life through the injuries received from a fire in the bush into which he had strayed.
Some uncertainty existing as to the source from whence funds are derivable for the purpose of having effected the works mentioned, Mr Powrie was empowered to apply to the Colonial Treasurer and Mr Montgomery on the subject.
The absence of the convenience afforded by a recognised burial place has been suffered here for years, and those to whom such a spot, wherein to buiy their dead, was a sort of solace, sought it by bearing their dead to Christchurcii, or to the Maori burial place, which the natives have sympathetically permitted. A further meeting is to be held as soon as the chairman has obtained the needed information, as the works are those of urgency.
