THE FIGHTING AT PLEVNA.

Bombay Sept 12

Russian official says :—The bombardment of Plevna continued unabated to the evening of September 10. The Russians captured another height commanding the town. Their cavalry defeated the Turkish cavalry on the Sophia road.

Sept. 13

Plevna is closely invested, the Turkish sorties being repulsed. It is estimated that the Russo-Roumanian forces amount to 80,000, with 356. guns ; the Turkish to 60,000, witk 230 guns.

A new bridge has been built at Nicopolis.

London, September 12

The Avalanche, for Wellington, had a collision in the channel. She sank immediately. There were ninety-nine souls on board. All were lost, except three of the crew. Will -wire to-morrow the names of the returning, colonists lost.

London, Sept. 13th

On Tuesday night, the Avalanche, bound for Wellington, when off Portland, was struck amidships by the American ship Forest, and sank in three minutes. The passengers,, numbering 63, were all drowned.; they were chiefly returning colonists. Of 34 seamen, three were saved, including the third officer. Of the crew ot the Forest, numbering 21, nine were.saved. The bodies are being washed ashore. Among the lists are whole families—eight Wilkins, six LeVs,,four Chamberlain's.

Wellington, 4 September 16.

'No confirmation'has yet been received here of the report that Plevna has fallen. September 14. Sir Julius Vogel telegraphs under date-Sept. 12 :—
