LITTLE AKAROA CEMETERY.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL. Sir,—Will yrm kindly allow me through the medium of your columns to call the attention of those interested to the following facts :—For some years past one of our oldest settiershas spent much valuable time in the praiseworthy endeavour to obtain for us a piece of ground suitable for a cemetery. After many delays and disappointments we were led to believe that his endeavours would at last be crowned with success ; but not so, for at this time the opinion of our community appeared to ha divided. Matters had got thus far, when a public meeting was called, now twelve months'ago, Mr J. Barker being chosen chairman ; he then laid before the meeting his correspondence with his Honor the Superintendent, relative to a piece of ground generously given by Mr Waghorn. A. resolution was then passed that the said ground be vested in his Honor the Superintendent, by so doing a sum of money would be forthcoming to enclose the same. The neit business of the meeting was to elect a board or committee to carry out all matters in reference to the cemetery, the members being duly chosen. I should now like to know what have they done ? Twelve months have now passed, and their highly talented chairman has not even thought it necessary'to call a single meeting of the Board. The grounds are now dotted with several mounds; it is, open on every side. I am sure, Sir. this would never have been the case had we groped on in our primitive way ; and I very much fear, through this culpable neglect, that our promised donation lies buried with provincialism. Perhaps this may have the effect.of arousing the Board from their long slumber, which would be welcome tidings to A SEMI-BARBARIAN.
