TEN WOULD-BE COUNCILLORS.

Ten would-be councillors Did for civic honours pine, One got a Venus twist, And then there were but nine. Nine sucking councillors At this were much elate, When another on a street lamp Hung himself, which left but eight. Eight budding councillors Were sure he'd gone to Heaven, When one of them down a grating Fell, and then there were but seven, Who positively jumped with glee, And ridiculed his fix, When a scheme for new public buildings Fell on one, and left but six. Six aspiring councillors Tried together to contrive, The Ashburton lands to measure, This killed one, and left but five, Who thought that such good fortune Votes and suffrages must draw, So one got up to make a speech, Then died, and left but four. Four teething Councillors _ Their number viewed with glee. Tried the centre of the town to find, One succumbed, which left but three, Who were quite of opinion that Mortality would do, When reclamation killed another, And only left but two, Who, wishing more reserves to find, When their work had just begun, Fell out about a section peg, And there was only left but one, Who, hoping for election now The others are not there, Sits on his box and thinks he'll do When he's elected mayor.
