Dunedin, August 17._ The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency have received the following information by telegram from the London ofiice under dale August 15.:—The wool sales opened-with a catalogue containing 5000 bales at the level of the preceding series. 21,000 bales have been sent to the manufacturing districts direct. Fine mutton tallow may he quoted at 43s per cwt., and beef tallow at 41s. In the leather trade tiie demand is quiet. Quotations for the best sides are 10£ d per lb. Messrs Cargih, Gibbs and Co. have received a telegram from Messrs Helmut!), Schwartz and Co., dated London, August 14, confirmatory of the message published yesterday relating to the wool sales. The message is as follows : —" The sale opened with a fair attendance of both home and foreign buyers. Competition is animated, and prices are unchanged compared with the closing rates of the last series. It will be remembered that at the close of the last series the fall of eight to ten per cent, which had taken place had been quite recovered."
