LONG BAY ROAD.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE AKAROA MAIL. Sir, —I see the separation question seems to be all the go at Wainui. . Wishing them good speed in their cause, 1, for one, think that we, on this side of the water, can do very well without them. But I pity Flea Bay, Bay, Long Bay, and all the

rest of the bays that have been in the shade for so long, if the Canny Scots, get hold of the money. They will find themselves in perpetual darkness, while their neighbours opposite, who have got? fair roads now, will still grumble and growl that their district is not done fairly by. Whoever " Fairplay" is, he certainly made a mistake if bethought that the bays in general would join the Wainui people. They are badly off enough now, and I am quite sure would be much worse, in joined with the canny gentlemen on the other side of the water. It seems to me that the whole of the outlying districts-have to suffer through the main road to Christchurch ; certainly it ought to be kept in good repair, but why could it not be made to be self-supporting by toll gates like the highroads in England. Then those that got the most benefit from it would have to pay the most towards keeping it in repair. There are many of the farmers on the Peninsula who do not use the highroad once a year, and who have to pay heavy rates for their propeity, and yet have no more roads than they make for themselves. Surely this kind of thing must soon come to an end. I suppose the Road Board are acquainted with the old proverb, that it was the last straw that broke the camel's back. I hear that they have got the Long Bay road surveyed again ; this is the fourth time it has been surveyed. Surely, they will not allow it to pass by again into the Red Tape box without a struggle ! Where compensation is to be paid, let them see to it at once; and if private parties stand in the way, asking more than the land is worth, let them put the Public Works Act into force, and compel them to take a fair price for their land, which ought to satisfy any just man.— Yours, &c, CHEESE TUB.
