AKAROA RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Fbiday, June 22, 1877. (Before Justin Ayhner, Esq., R.M.) WEIGHTS AND MEASURES ACT, 1868. G. A, Oborn was charged with having in his possession unstamped weights. The Police asked that the case be adjourned to Thursday, 28th instant.—Granted. James Daly ..was charged with having in his possession, contrary to clause 45 of the Act, six unstamped weights. Four of the weights were too heavy, and two correct, but all weie unstamped. Mr. Daly stated that the weights were not in use, and were unstamped through an oversight in not being sent to the Inspector after being last adjusted.—Fined Is., and the weights condemned, J. Beecher was charged with having an unstamped gallon measure in his possession It was discovered in Court that the measure was stamped, and the case was dismissed. H. Wagstaff was. charged with the same offence. . It was explained that the measure in question must have been overlooked when the ethers "were sent to be stamped. The Bench remarked that in every case where there was a conviction under the Act, all weights and measures must be forfeited.—Fined Is., and the measure forfeited. • [Tikaou, Native Assessor, here took his seat on the Bench.] Tamata Waka, from Little River, was charged by the Police with assaulting his wife. It appears that this native lady is in the habit of a Sunday afternoon of gossiping with her neighbours, a European custom, to which Waka strongly objects. Mutual recriminations ensued, and sticks and other weapons were freely used on both.sides. The Bench advised both parties to try and make matters up. The Native Assessor also advised all parties to go.and live in peace. The case was dismissed, and the parties warned that the same sort of thing must not occur again. The Court then adjourned.
