AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL
A meeting of the Akaroa Borough Council took ploce in their offices last Wednesday evening,, at 7 o'clock. _ The members present were His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), and Crs. Wagstaff, Penlington, Cullen, Bruce, Chadwick, Annand, and Waeckerle. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was received from F. Halm regarding the encroachments of the creek running through his property. It was the opinion of the Council that the creek in question, running through private property, could not under any regulation of the Council be interfered with. Cr. Penlington moved that the Clerk be instructed to acknowledge the receipt of Mr. Halm's letter, and to state that the Council would look into the matter. Seconded by Cr Cullen, and carried. A request was received from Mr., Chadwick, applying to erect two new shops on his section of'land on the Beach road. On the motion of Cr. Cullen, seconded by Cr. Annand, leave was granted, A letter was received from Mr. Garwood, requesting the Council to remove a stump in the street opposite his property in Jollie-street South. Cr. Wagstaff moved that the stump in question be removed, so as to enable Mr. Garwood to fence, and allow of the flow of water in the side channels. Seconded by Cr. Waeckerle, and carried, Mr. F. Halm applied for leave to erect a new stockyard on his property in Jolliestreet. Leave was granted, subject to the approval of the Inspector of Nuisances. A letter was to hand from several residents in Teinuka, asking the Council for information in regard to the formation of municipalities. The Clerk was instructed to reply, and to give all possible information. A quotation of timber was received from Mr. E. C. Latter, and the Clerk was instructed to accept same. Mr. F. Lelievre wrote to say that he objected to gravel the part of Muter-street as requested by the Council. It was resolved to let the matter regarding this street stand over for the present. The Colonial Treasurer requested a statement of the Council's funds on 30th June instant. The Clerk was instructed to supply the necessary figures. FOOTPATHS. A petition was received from the residents in Levaud-street, between Meech's bridge and Brittan-street, asking the Council to form footpaths on West side of street.. The Council agreed to form the footway as requested, on the understanding that the owners pay half of cost. PAYMENTS. The following tenders were received for metalling Brittan-street and forming Joliestreet, from Meech's bridge to Holdings :— £ s d. J. Vangioni 14 4 0 Sigley &Co ... ... 17 17 0 J. Curtis 10 11 0 E. Staples 14 13 0 The tender of J. Curtis was accepted, Councillor Cullen proposing that Mr. Vangioni's tender be accepted. FINANCIAL REPORT. Cr. Wagstaff brought up the report of the Finance Committee, from which it appeared that the Council will have to curtail the amount of work originally proposed, owing to the Government retaining so large" a part of the subsidy for hospital purposes. POUND. It was resolved that the Clerk write to the Colonial Secretary, and have the new Pound gazetted, and that the material of the old Pound be sold by auction. DELEGATE TO WELLINGTON. It was resolved, that owing to tha expense, the Council would not send a delegate to Wellington to represent Akaroa at the conference of Municipalities. BYE LAWS. The Clerk was instructed to write to the Colonial Secretary regarding the By-laws. The Council then adjourned.
