Wellington, May 25.
This morning Thomas Brown, a prisoner on remand for stealing watches from Duncan's store, hanged himself at the gaol. The act was most deliberate. He took the opportunity at breakfast time to remain behind in the cell a few minutes, got a piece of rope used to tie
bedding, fixed it over the door, got ona footstool, took off his boots, and kicked the stool away. Five • minutes .afterwards the warder missing him, went in search and fonnd him dead. An inquest will be held to-morrow. ,',..- Wbstport, May 25. A heavy gale is raging here. A mishap occured to the steamer Maori last night, while weighing anchor in the roadstead. A heavy sea striking her, caused a suddenjerk, carrying away the steam winch, completely smashing it. The anchor and 30 fathoms of chain cable were slipped, but were first buoyed for picking up wheni. the 'gale abates*. ■■■ ' DuNEDiN, May 25.
The inquest on the body of. Margaret M'lntyre was resumed to-day. . Dr., Bakewell stated that death had resulted —first, from long continued neglect and want of proper food ; secondly, from injuries received a few days before death ; thirdly, from congestion of the lungs and inflammation of the bowels ; and fourthly, from alcohol having been administered in large doses 24 hours before death. Had medical assistance been called in in sufficient time the life of the girl might have been saved. There are still ten witnesses to examine.
Nelson, May 26.
The Taranaki arrived this morning. At seven o'clock .last night, when off Cape Farewell, a tremendous sea struck her on the starboard side, carrying away the two boats on the port side, and dashing one starboard ' boat against the engine-room skylight. She will remain until to-morrow morning to repair damages. She goes direct to Port Chalmers.
