He believed that the work could not be done for the money, but as a deposit accompanied the tender, the Board was bound to give it consideration. It would teach the tenderer to be more cautious in future m his calculations. Mr. Lelievre seconded the motion, which was carried. UNPROFITABLE LABOUR. Mr. Piper drew the Board's attention to a number of men employed on the Pigeon Bay road, whose labour he likened to hen pecking. He said that they should be supplied with proper tools, as those they were now using were quite unsuited, and brought about loss to the Board. PAYMENTS. The following accounts were passed for payment:— £ s d J. Sheath, drain pipes ... 8 5 0 T. Edwards 6 13 0 Saston and Williams ... 211 0 £17 9 0 SPECIAL GRANTS. Mr. Houghton said that he had noticed that the Pigeon Bay R.oad Board had made application to the County Chairman for the expenditure of the special grant of £1000 for the Pigeon Bay Road. He considered that it would be wise for the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board to apply for its share of the grants without delay, and would therefore move—"That the clerk be instructed to apply to the County Chairman for it* proportion of the special grants now lying to the credit of a trust account in the Bank of New Zealand, Akaroa."
Mr. Shadbolt seconded the motion, and remarked that the session of the General Assembly was now close at hand, and unless prompt action' were taken, the Board would run the risk of losing the grants altogether. Mr. Duxbury inquired if any communication had been received from the County Chairman, asking the Board whether it was willing to undertake the expenditure of the grants for works within its boundaries. He remarked that there were no members present at the meeting held in the Town Hall recently representing the Little River or Okains Boards. He considered that it was the duty of the Chairman, in accordance with the expression of opinion elicited, to obtain the Board's sanction before forwarding the resolution to the proper quarter. The Chairman then put the motion, which was carried. WORKING OVERSEER. Mr. Duxbury moved—" That application be invited from persons willing to fill the office of working overseer, at a salary of £125 a-year, and to find his own horse." He said that the necessity for such an appointment must be manifest to the Board, as the Board had now c a number of works in course of progress which constantly required the supervision of such an officer. Mr. Houghton seconded the motion. Avhich was carried. okain's eoad. The clerk was instructed to employ a man to clear the Okain's road. The Board then adjourned for a fortnight.
