Mrs. Adams and Miss Henderson will be brought up this morning at the Resident Magistrate's Court, on a charge of perjury. Mr. J. S. Williams, of Christchurch, has been retained to defend the accused. We again beg to call attention to the Good Templar's open lodge meeting, announced to be held to-morrow evening, at the Oddfellow's Hall. The entertainment will be open to the public free of charge.
The first number of a new journal, to be called the Ashburton Mail, is announced to be published at Ashburton about the Bth of June next.
A meeting of gentlemen interested in the inauguration of frfjf* Akaroa Steeplechase meeting was heldiat Beecher's Hotel on Saturday evening l*t, Mr. G. Scarbrough in the chair. A programme, comprising four events, was arranged, and ordered to be advertised in the Akaroa Mail. It was decided that the meeting should take place on Mr. G. Inman's run, German Bay, on Thursday, the 24th May, and that Messrs Bridge and Bushell bo instructed to sell by auction, the right of one publican's booth, refreshment booth, and race cards, on Saturday next. A subscription list was opened in the room, when some £12 were subscribed. The programme appears in another column.
The annual soiree and entertainment in connexion with the " Second to None Lodge" of Good Templars, was held in Pigeon Bay, on Tuesday last. Great credit is due to the ladies for the manner in which they sTiperintended the tea arrangements. After jtistiee had been done to the edibles, the entertainment commenced, and was well carried out. Valuable assistance was rendered by several of the Akaroa Brothers, in the shape of readings, recitations, and songs. Mr. T. Gates presided at the harmonium in his usual able manner. There was a very large attendance and all seemed well satisfied with the evening's amusement, if we may judge from the hearty manner in which the various performers were applauded. The hall was cleared and dancing kept up tiil an early hour in the morning.
Messrs Bridge and Bush ell will offer for sale by auction on Saturday next, the right to erect one publican's booth, cue refreshment booth, and copyright of race cards for the forthcoming Akaroa Steeplechase Meeting.
At a meeting of the Akaroa and Wainui Pioad Board, held on Saturday last, it was decided to invite applications for the office of working- overseer to the Board at a salary of £125,
A meteor, like an immense sky rocket, passed over Akaroa on Friday evening last, about 7 o'clock, taking in the whole arc of the heavens in its flight, running nearly north-east and south-west.
The culvert on the main road, nearly opposite our office, caved in last night, and as its present condition is highly dangerous to traffic', we trust that the Works Committee will take prompt mersures to repair
