AKAROA LIBRARY.
The second annual meeting of the Akaroa Library Society was held last Monday evening in the library at seven o'clock. There was a considerable number of subscribers, and Mr. J. Aylmer was called to the chair. The Chairman after stating the business of the meeting, asked Mr. G-. Scarbrough, the treasurer, to read the annual report of the Committee.
The report showed the financial position of the Society to be in a good position, having paid off over £40 of old debts, and were able to carry a balance of £2 17s forward to new account, after the purchase of 370 volumes of of new books. The new books were of a valuable and interesting nature, and included amongst others the first five volumes of the last ** edition of the Encyclopedian Britannica, McCulloch's Commercial Dictionary, the Eoyal Atlas, &c.
Mr. Hemingway moved the adoption of •» the report and accounts as read, which was seconded by Mr. Archer, and carried.
Mr. McGregor asked the meeting to pasa a vote of thanks to the out-going Committee, for their services during the past year, remarking that the business of the Society had been conducted carefully, and that the choice of books, always a difficult and invidious task, had been fairly and honestly performed in the interests of the subscribers.
The vote of thanks was seconded by Mr. Hemingway, and carried.
Mr. Aylmer, the President, said, in returning thanks, that the great object of the Committee had been to reduce existing liabilities, and in this they had succeeded to a great extent, and their success was in a great measure owing to the careful and energetic offorts of their treasurer, Mr., Searbrough, who had been the main stay of the institute. They would be able to hand over the library, not only almost % free from debt, but in first-class working condition, to the new Committee. He regretted that the treasurer thought of resigning, but he was sure if the subscribers would insist upon it, he would still act in »* his old capacity.
The election of a new Committee was then proceeded with, when the following gentlemen were elected—Messrs. Aylmer, Inwood, Anson, Scarbrough, Beecher, Sims, Harris, Penlington, Bruce, Hemingway, Dalglish and Annand. Mr. Justin Aylmer was afterwards elected president, Mr. W. Sims, vice-president, and Mr. G-. Scarbrough, treasurer.
The library is now in a first-class working order, and the opportunities for the exchange of books being every evening and Saturday afternoon, and the library open all day for consulting books of reference and reading, we are quite sure that fifteen shillings, the amount of the annual subscription, could not be better spent than in becoming a member of this institution.
